Tescos offered me cover recently but at a price. A premium for a 5 day trip to Europe for 2 went from £12 to almost £50 when I declared my condition plus reading the small print they had plenty of get-out clauses. Depending on how far away anyone intends to travel I'm not sure whether we'd wwant to be treated by an unknown doctor in an unknown hospital (with the potential of no vasculitis experience?). The priority for me, in case of emergency would simply be to get to my own hospital or Addenbrooke's. Good to know there is appropriate cover available though. Thanks J&S.

When we were visiting south west rural France a few years ago, John needed some blood tests, we called at the local village doctor (GP) not expecting him to know anything about WG. How wrong were we!!. He was very knowledgable, asked lots of questions about John's medication and treatment, and he spoke to John in English after smiling at our attempts at French. He popped John on the scales and told him he ought to cut down on the vin rouge and baguettes while he was on the medication for WG. Which made me smile :-) . Charged us 15 euros for a prescription for 5 blood tests and sent us on our way.

So when we visit France now we have the confidence of knowing that WG is probably better known by the medical profession there than it is here in the UK.

Previously my conversations with insurance medical departments revealed that they would only cover cerebral vasculitis if I agreed to being categorised under Lupus. Recently though something seems to have changed and I managed to get annual cover through Insureandgo.co.uk. It came at a cost but CNS vasculitis was now a category and I was able to complete the medical online.

Martin, my priorities are just the same. If I'm ill I want to get home quick! I really struggled to get cover prior to our trip to Mexico in February. I was turned down by a LOT of companies while a couple offered me insurance but it would have cost me £500 ish just for 2 weeks. Not only the Wegeners, it's hypertension and all sorts.

Anyway, I found a very satisfactory solution! NatWest (who we don't bank with) offer a 'Black Card' It's £250 per year and comes with a fairly useful bunch of benefits. One is Worldwide travel insurance (underwritten by Chartis). There' no fuss about screening pre-existing conditions. All I have to do is go see my GP, get him to confirm I am fit to travel and then document it on my notes. If I was going to 'fail' I wouldn't be going anyway. Still, we have to consider where we go. Good cover though and I think is up to 85.

I just went through online for a policy with insure and go,and they refused to cover me :( Oh well, didnt want a holiday next year anyway :)

Give Staysure.co.uk a try. If they won't cover you they may point you in the right direction. AgeUK is another possible .... you need to be over 50. Good luck!!
