Stopping Azathioprine

After a blood test My GP has said my platelets are down to 139 (should be at least 150) and to stop taking Azathioprine. I am worried about this as I have GPA and I know it is an important drug. Has anyone else had this problem and what was the outcome. Thanks.

Hi Tanzy. Sorry to hear of your dilemma. It happens sometimes but I would just double check with your consultant if I was you for peace of mind. Others may have a different perspective. All the best

I would definitely check with your consultant. There are other immune suppressants you can take instead. If you were on azathrioprine it suggests you need one.

Hi Tanzy, yes I had the same issue. I haven’t been on Aza since April 2019 and wasn’t offered an alternative. I was also taken off Prednisolone in the March so haven’t been on any meds since. I have remained in remission. However, I have had a few issues since but have been told it’s not due to not being on the meds, but we’re complications caused due to being on them! Try not to worry. I was the same, but I am regularly monitored. Take care x

Hi I had to be taken of azathioprine due to bladder cancer worry luckily that was ok . I have embraced natural methods of healing earthing, turmeric , meditation, reiki I am keeping very well no return to azathioprine ! I had been on it for 15 years so was very nervous very lucky things worked out ok for me ! I agree speak to your consultant mine weighed up the risks and took me off it . There are other drugs available now . I’m a big fan of earthing there is a book and film . The Tour de France use earthing recovery bags . My bloods went normal after 4 months of using an earthing mat and I have never looked back . I know not for everyone but just in case someone is interested. There is also a new book out by Dr David Hamilton why woo woo works the science behind complimentary therapies . Hope you get better xxx

I have never heard of Earthing - anything is worth a go with GPA after 6yrs!

Hi it definitely helped me the earthing mats are not expensive, you don’t see immediate results it takes a bit of time so persevere if you decide to try it ! I think it was 3 to 4 months of using it for a few hours a day for me then it progressively got better and better 😀

There is a film about it 😀
