Hi I have been contacted by someone with CV who is having a flushed/reddened face, which he thinks is a side effect of Aziathioprine?

How long has he been on Azathioprine? Normally side effects occur quite quickly. I must admit I haven't heard of this as a side effect, and it's not one I've had either (been on Azathioprine since 1998). However checking online Patient Information Leaflet details I see AZA can cause skin to react differently to sun, though we're hardly at the sunniest time of year at the moment LOL!

I would recommend that the individual goes to speak to their doctor. To be honest they will probably be told that it's nothing to worry about, and to carry on with the drug. It is a relatively minor side effect, and cosmetic more than dealing with, for example, day-long nausea. But if very concerned there are other drugs that can be tried. Their side effects are likely to be worse though.

I echo what is said above and would add that a flushed/reddened face can be a symptom of vasculitis flaring and may not be a side effect at all.

Kind regards.
