Searching for an (nephrologist's) advice

Hello everyone,

I am new here, but thank you so much for creating this hub and I am amazed by how people could be supportive without even knowing each other, this is fantastic!

My father had been diagnosed with kidney failure some months ago and is currently considering a cross-transplantation, where my mother would donate her kidney to a person from another couple.

However, after everything matching, they discovered a small tumor into the other donor's kidney, and now they are not sure they would go ahead with the transplantation.

As we are Bulgarian, we did consult with a specialist in Bulgaria, but we are getting some controversial opinions on what should be done.

Therefore, I was wondering has this happened to anyone before, and would somebody kindly recommend a good nephrologist in London that I could consult on the matter?

Thank you so much!

Hi jaboka21

I'm glad you've found the forum and reaching out as it's an emotional time the live donor process for all concerned.

I'm surprised that they are still considering doing the transplant with the oriinal paired exchange option and not just moving on and finding another match. My mum was going to be my paired exchange but it was found her one kidney was smaller and had scarring so she was removed from the exchange.

My consultant said my dad's results for a second opinion to Dr Heather Brown at Guys and St Thomas in London.

I hope this helps but please prepare yourself for it not going ahead as they do have very strict guidelines.

I hope it all works out and keep us posted.

Take care

Hello Charlene,

Thank you so much for your reply!

They are currently looking for another match, but they are however considering as they are afraid that another match would not be found. The problem is also that in Bulgaria cross-transplantation is not allowed so they are currently consulting in Turkey, which makes it a bit more complicated.

I will get in touch with Dr Heather Brown and see what she says.

Thank you very very much once again! I hope everything is alright with you!

All the best!
