Hello everyone. I've been offered a course of steroid injections to help with my Tinnitus. Does anyone have any experience of these please?

Hi Tinnitusbegone

Have they said how the steroids will help?

Hello. No not yet, I have a review in 3 months time when I hope to get some answers.

I recommend you discuss this with them in as much detail as you can to help you make an informed choice. I would prepare questions like How will they help? what problem are they treating? How do the injections help? how does that work? etc

Anything that reduces Anxiety will help so that's always a good starting point for assessing if something is worth doing or not.

Keep us posted - be interested to hear about what happens in the future

I think they can offer them if they suspect Timpani damage but my understanding is that that needs to be a very early treatment, I mean within days following the onset or physical trauma, etc, that caused the sudden T.

The injection consist of a steroid and Diazepam that in conjuction with one another help build up the layers of the inner ear canal and repair any nerve and fibrous material damage. My findings were that it could have helped me but days became weeks, and months and the window of opportunity for steroids closed as I was passed between ENT, Audiology, Neurology and back and forth with no clear diagnosis of cause.

So if they have offered you them - get on the phone now and pester them with questions and tell them to get on with it.

That's my own research in to my own condition so for goodness sake don't take it as gospel.

Always do your own research.

Thank you, I will certainly do the research. At my last appointment with an audiologist when discussing it with her, she was quite shocked they'd offered it to me. It is a trial so I'll make sure that it won't make things worse.

I think the treatment needing to be early is more to do with sudden hearing loss which can be helped by timely use of steroids. I have Meniere's and steroids are sometimes used for Meniere's patients (I have not used them). I agree with everyone who is recommending caution and a lot of questions. Apart from the benefits they would hope you (the original poster) would experience I would want to know whether its a one off, a course, further doses needed in the future, and most importantly possible adverse effects.

Thanks for your helpful advice. I will make sure to ask lots of questions.

Good morning, If its going to help you mentally then go for it, my personal experience and knowledge found out afterwards if that steroid injections need to be done within 10 days of hearing loss. my hearing loss and tinnitus happened very fast, (overnight), but the steroid injections were 3 months later and my consultants last words before I was put under were "this probably wont work". Although mentally I needed to go ahead with it as like you i'm guessing you will try anything. My audiologist did say that my hearing had improved very slightly on the hearing test after the steroid injection. Good luck!! let us know how you get on.

Thank you, that's very helpful although it sounds like the consultant didn't give you a lot of confidence before the op. Good it improved your hearing but did the tinnitus get any better?

Hi although the audiologist said my hearing improved on a hearing test I didn't notice any improvement. The tinnitus hasn't improved at all, sorry. But like I said before if you feel mentally that you need to have it done that go for it. I didn't have any negative side effects from the steroid injection but I also didn't have anything positive. Good Luck.

Hi, I can completely understand wanting to try things to get rid of this, I will only say - and repeat what has been said above - ask what they expect from this? What dosage the injection is? Will you need to taper down injections, or is it a one off?

As someone who had massive complications on steroids, and have known many who have also suffered in various ways, getting all the information will allow you to identify risk Vs reward. Doctors are vary blasé about steroids, but there's nothing blasé about them. Not trying to scare you, but I do believe they should only be used if 100% necessary, and you deserve to know everything before.

Hope you find some peace (in amongst the constant bloody noise!)

Thank you, I will consider this very carefully. I was surprised that these were offered as i've had tinnitus for many years and it's the first time I've heard about the injections.

Yeah, it does seem strange, but I guess I don't know anything about their research. Ironically, my tinnitus was almost constant on steroids, so they must be using an extremely low dose, and maybe injection is different? I hope they give you all the information you need.

Dec 19th 2019, I had been suffering from unilateral T for about 5 years and I was referred by ENT QMC Nottingham to Royal Derby hospital, who had - apparently - a super, duper T consultant who was going to give me a steroid injection. In short, he was aghast at the idea and refused point blank. He couldn't believe that I was actually referred specifically for this. All I can say is continue with your research on this and ask questions. All the 👌

Thanks for your reply. Oh goodness, my audiologist did say the same to me. I don't think I'll be going down that route either now!

I think that on TV somewhere in the UK or one of the biggest countries over there that they were doing the steroid injections inside the ear and it was happened with tonight's been a while since I've seen it

I cannot believe doctors who have no other solutions, will just prescribe, willy-nilly, steroids. I'd get a second or even third opinion on that one. They are bad news when given on a regular, prolonged basis...and are not a cure all like some doctors dole them out to be.

Thank you, I will definitely do that.
