oooh what a question! If you drink more than say three units at any one time, your tinnitus will let you know all about it the next day I think!

Actually my reaction to alcohol and yours might be completely different. But if I have a glass or two of wine of an evening I find it relaxing and am less likely to notice tinnitus.

In the long term Yes.

DO NOT use Alcohol to help you sleep. It affects the quality of sleep and you'll feel sluggish, raise your anxiety, so in long term you will struggle to live with the condition.

Look at your diet and routine (especially the consumption of alcohol).

Initially we feel so desperate to find ANYTHING to block the beast. You will only find this raises anxiety. It's the anxiety that raises our perception and lessens our ability to live with it.

I do have the odd glass of wine and find my T is a bit worse the next day. I don’t know if it does long term damage. If it’s to help you sleep what I take is herbal valerian or magnesium glycanate.

Yes they do. I haven’t taken the sleeping tablets the doc gave me, didn’t want to start that. I take Kalms one a night that’s the valerian one. And I really think the magnesium glycanate works for me.

Hi Toby, I like to have a few drinks at the weekend and I find it helps me relax and sleep at night a bit longer which in turn helps me from not focusing on my T, but I do find that if I drink a few to many my T seems louder the next day which I put down to having a hangover plus T, which is not good and something I try to avoid

It has no effect on mine at all, but it helps me relax and then not notice the T so much. Nothing I eat or drink affects my T.

Disclosure: I have had drinking problems in the past.

I haven't drunk a drop of alcohol since my T started 2 months ago. Reason: I'd keep going in the mistaken belief that it will help me cope. It would be a slippery slope to a place I'm not prepared to go. I feel happier, healthier and in an OK place (despite the severe T) at the moment - and OK is OK in my book.

Alcohol would be the start of a severe downhill run in to hell.

Pleanty of other ways to get your kicks Toby - I'm cycling/ walking/ making stuff (early-retired Engineer). I still go to the pub and drink pints of ginger ale (with a splash of lime) I'm reastablishing my social life, avoiding heavy drinkers and sticking with the winners and those mates who care about me. It's a slow process but it's progress not perfection that counts.

If you have any history of alcohol/ drug misuse - even mild -for F's sake don't drink on the T. You'll be sealing your own fate.

Keep going mate.

The problem with alcohol (in moderation) in England is that society in general, and the medical profession in particular, consider it a form of legalised poison. On the continent, it is considered a natural part of life. As far as I know they are not leading wretched lives in Europe's wine growing districts and if they were I'm sure the puritans here would have picked up on that and further loaded us all with guilt. But they haven't and there can be only one reason for that - the people concerned don't lead wretched lives from it and have similar life spans.

thanks very interesting observation

If you haven't a history of problems with alcohol I don't imagine (in moderation) it'll make the T any worse but it won't make it any better (at least in the long term) and in fact alcohol can be a causal factor in T getting worse.

I guess Ray has hit the nail squarish by using that magic word - that folk like me can struggle with - Moderation. That's the key. With anything in life in fact.

Alcohol won't help you sleep, it would actually make your sleep quality much worse.I find lack of sleep or tiredness makes my T louder.
