Tinnitus Flare - Still New to This

I’ve now been dealing with T, primarily in my right ear, for 2 months now (noise induced). The first 2-3 weeks was challenging to say the least but I was really trying to keep a positive mindset and I did notice it reduced alot and slowly things were improving. The last few days, I feel like it’s become more prominent again. My stress at work has been a bit higher so I’m thinking it’s related. I guess I’m just looking to see what others do when they are stressed to try and help with the flare-ups and how long they can last. I wouldn’t say I’ve habituated by any means but I’ve become better at accepting it and im not constantly “looking” for the sound. Any tips on dealing with T is definitely welcome!

hello Orchid. Within the last week or so there have been several posts similar to yours. Scroll down and have a read of them and their replies.

This should reassure you that you have the right basic mindset to deal with the T - you are not looking for it and trying to analyse it. Such attempted analysis just makes it more prominent - as you know already!

And do go to the website of the charity Tinnitus UK.

Thank you! It’s comforting being able to share experiences and talk to others who are going through this journey. Glad I’m not alone in this!

Hi Orchid,I also have had T since July of this year and still adjusting. Completely empathise. Distraction works fir me as well as meditating. When I feel my attention been drawn to the T I bring it back to my breathing which helps me calm and centre again. It takes practice but it does help. Emotions and mood are linked to T so try not to feed T with fear otherwise it grows louder. Accepting it is the best way forward. Journal may help as you can reflect on your good days as well as your not so good .

I do wish you well and it will settle so you can live with it but not allow it to debilitate your daily life and mental health. This forum is a great support.

Take care

🌷

Thank you so much! I’m definitely going to give the journaling a try, I think it could provide good perspective. I’m very happy to have found this platform! The sense of community is very comforting 🙂

Hi like most have already explained acceptance is key to tinnitus habituation but personally I needed a lot of help to get to acceptance. I found initially I just wanted rid of the tinnitus as like you it was noise induced and in my case sent me into an emotional spin. After trying lots of stuff I found my way through to acceptance via an 8 week “MCBT” course aimed at tinnitus. That was in London - perhaps see if an MCBT practitioner available where you are.

That’s my issue also, it the course in person or can it be done online do you know?

I did my MCBT in person in London with Dr Laurence McKenna - sorry I don’t know if he does online.

Thank you for the recommendation! I did attend a tinnitus clinic in my area and worked with a specialist for a little bit. I didn’t go through a specific program but maybe looking into something like that could further help the acceptance process. Did you find some relief after completing your program?

Hi

I’ve suffered tinnitus for many years, sometimes it’s as loud as I think I can stand but somehow I get through and it does get better.

At the moment and I don’t know why my T is excellent just a slight whistling in my left ear which is okay as to how it has been.

Living with T is a challenge which you can adjust to over time, distraction is the key, put you mind onto something you enjoy doing.

I hope this is of some help to you, I would never have believed that my tinnitus could be so good as it is right now.

Wishing you all the best. 😊

That’s amazing to hear how well managed your T has become. I hope I will get there too! I have definitely found some ways to keep myself distracted if I start to notice it more. Thank you for your kind and positive response 😊

Hello Orchid 🙂 You've got lots of good advice here already. T and stress are inextricably linked. If you can manage your stress you can manage your T . The key is to stay as calm as possible. T spikes and settles regularly. It's no cause for alarm. If I'm honest it sounds as if you're doing very well so far .

Not what you're looking for?
