Does anyone have any experience of acupuncture specifically relating to T?
My T is bilateral, a high pitch frequency, and 24/7. Some days are better than others, but currently going through a rough patch and wondering about legitimate options. Someone mentioned the idea of acupuncture, but not sure whether it is worth the time/money…….
Any experiences, positive or negative, would be great to hear.
Thanks

I tried acupuncture and dry needling. It didn’t help me unfortunately. There are studies where it has reported to have helped though. I think it said it helps where tight muscles are causing the tinnitus. I might be wrong though. There was a video on YouTube where the doctor explains it and shows the points where acupuncture works. I’ll try and find it for you.
Dry needling was recommended to me by an otologist who noticed that the areas where I have pain in my head are consistent with TMJ (issues with the jaw). I know my issues are hyperacusis and tinnitus caused by noise damage but I do clench my teeth and have had jaw issues in the past, so I went to see the physio he recommended.
The treatment proposed was jaw manipulations, Low Level Laser Therapy and dry needling. I was told a lot of people did get relief from it but that your symptoms can get worse before they get better and that it was actually a good sign if they did get worse as it showed she was hitting the right spots.
I didn't want to risk it at the time but annoyingly I do now have bad jaw issues so have decided to go ahead with the treatment. Last Friday I had a less rigorous session than she would usually do. I can say that I feel worse with the ringing worse and generally feeling not great but I have been getting worse anyway day by day, plus a 90 minute round trip to Central London might have done that. However I am going to persevere and have 3 more sessions as I am desperate to do something about my hyperacusis/tinnitus and the jaw issues.
I suppose like with anything else, different people get different results with different treatments but I can keep you informed. She said she will tell you if this treatment is likely to help you, i.e. if you seem to have TMJ issues.
Thanks PC&G. I too clench my teeth, particularly during the night and have a mouth guard to prevent dental damage. I did have this for many years before the T started so although the two things may be connected, I am not sure how closely. What I do know is that when life is more stressful I clench more and the T is worse, so maybe I am overlooking something obvious!!
I would be interested to know how your treatment goes if that’s ok?
Appreciate your time in responding in such detail. Thanks.
Yeah I have a splint on the front of my teeth which usually does the job but when I stress, like at the moment, I still get sore teeth, jaw and headaches. As I say, I know that for the most part my tinnitus is down to hyperacusis caused by noise but the areas where I get pain in my head and ears do correspond to TMJ problems so I think there might be some way it could help.
I sleep on my front, on the floor and woke up last week with pain in my jaw joint and ears ringing more loudly. The physio told me I shouldn't be sleeping on the floor and that sleeping on my front with my head to one side will be straining my neck and causing me issues. She gave me tips on side and back sleeping, and whilst as yet I have not noticed any improvement with pain or ringing, I have slept better than in weeks.
I have my next session Friday so will let you know how that goes. I feel pretty dreadful at the moment, 3 and a bit days after the treatment, which she says this should only last a couple of days but I am invariably more sensitive than most people to any change in my body.
I find it so hard not to become almost ‘superstitious’ about it……if I have a better day I am racking my brain trying to work out what I did differently etc. Fortunately I sleep reasonably well (thanks to some Bose Sleepbuds), most of the time, however the last few weeks have been more unsettled for reasons I can’t fathom - nothing particularly stressful going on right now…..
Your treatment does sound interesting, however being of an anxious persuasion, the idea of getting worse before better would make me nervous…..
I hope the next treatment goes well for you. Would be interested to know how it pans out…….
I tried it, mainly for muscular issues on the same side as my T, it worked for that in that it eased the pain. As for the T, it made no noticeable difference but was enjoyable and relaxing.
It’s not known as a way to help T specifically but worth a go, I also tried reflexology which again was relaxing but no change in T.
