I’ve had tinnitus for most of my life (low level heard in a silent room). In 2020, I had low iron and it got worse. It doesn’t freak me out as I’ve accepted it and still can mostly hear it in a silent room - apart from mornings when it’s worse. The hissing sound is worse and then it settles after I get up and start the day. I also hear like zaps upon waking. No pain and no other symptoms. Do you think it’s from laying flat all night? Just curious really. X

just my personal opinion here. The zaps: I wonder if your ears need dewaxing?
Sounds worse first thing: Maybe because you’re not thinking about anything in particular, so the T (as is its delightful way) decides to makes itself known. When you are concentrating on more interesting things the T fades into the background.
Thanks so much for your reply. I often wonder if the noise in my right ear is due to something in there - I’ve been referred to an audiologist so will ask them. I’m not sure what can be done.
The noise in my head is like electricity and worse when I go in my living room - I often wonder if it reacts to the Wi-Fi?
Yes - I definitely listen out for it in the morning!
funny you mentioned about W-iFi. My tinnitus is worse after using my computer broadband or if I fall asleep in the lounge(where the computer is). Doesn't happen in other rooms.
Hi Jul48 - your story with T is similar to mine. My T developed about 15 years ago and is mostly noticeable in the evenings/at night, but (so far) hasn't stopped me sleeping. During the day, it's a low level hissing sound, but tends to get worse with stress or certain activities, eg driving. I've tried different pillow combinations to see if it makes a difference at night, but it doesn't seem to. A similar response here to Happyrosie, I think? The T can 'change gear' sometimes into more of a whine, but this doesn't last for long and soon reverts back to it's normal level. It hasn't improved over the years, but hasn't got any worse either - fingers crossed!
Thanks so much for your reply. I’m hoping mine doesn’t get worse. I think soooo many people have it, it’s very common. Yep, it defo changes gear depending on various things. It just makes me anxious occasionally. When I’m busy I don’t notice it so much.
I know it sounds a bit of a pain….but on a weekend…or when you don’t have to get a good night’s sleep….as you wonder if lying flat is the problem…have you tried piling up the pillows & trying to sleep more upright?
I doubt it would solve your Tinnitus as you have had t so long…but it would at least stop you wondering!
My T can be screaming when I wake up in the morning (but sometimes not) and then calms a bit when I've got up and had breakfast. I've thought low blood-pressure during the night might be the cause but my experience in the day contradicts this, as often it is relatively calm when I am sitting still and gets worse when I start to move around. Maybe it is low sugar at the end of the night. Another possibility is that after a long period of silence during the night, the brain turns up its internal volume control, which results in the volume of T noise being increased. I don't really know. I also sometimes get a zapping or short squelching/crunching sound in my head, but this tends to be when I'm on the point of falling asleep (especially if dosing in the afternoon) and I suspect they are dream-like sounds.
Wow - I get the zapping/crunching sound just as I’m coming around in the morning. I wonder what it is? Some mornings it’s more often than others. So similar to you!
wow Fridays Childs, the way that you describe your T in that way I can really relate to - I’ve never heard it expressed as ‘turns up the volume after a period of silence’. I hope you don’t own the copyright to this expression!
Hi there. Lots of good replies here. I also often wake up with louder tinnitus. I have pretty much put it down to 2 things. Clenching/ grinding teeth, and very stressful dreams. My dentist made me a splint, which has pretty much solved the teeth issue, but no idea how to tackle the dreams!! Like most others here I have been to doctor, audiologist, and ENT, with everything checking ok. Like yourself, as I'm getting used to it, it tails off during the day. Neck issues will elevate tinnitus too. Mine did for a while, but using one of those funny shaped pillows seemed to solve that part of it. I now switch on classic fm the minute I wake. Specifically on a little tinny sounding radio. A good quality speaker is no use for high frequency tinnitus. Hope some of these replies may give you some ideas. Take care.
Yes, lots of helpful replies, which is very much appreciated. I think it makes me a bit anxious at times thinking it’s something serious however I can’t see how it can be as I otherwise feel absolutely great and have no other symptoms. I think it’s such a common issue but it sometimes gets to me, esp when I have time to think about it. That’s interesting about the speakers!
