T worse in the mornings

Hi, My tinnitus is always worse when I wake up, even after a little nap. Tinnitus lasts all day and I get the occasional evening with no tinnitus even watching tv and I dread going to bed because I know it's back in the morning.Does anyone else have this?

I’d say this was very common. Because you are not distracted, Mr T decides that you need to concentrate on HIM.

Are you aware of the website of Tinnitus UK? Lots of helpful information there.

Also, have a look at the very helpful CBT ideas that Vincentchan has quoted in reply to the post headed “tinnitus advice please” below.

Hi Yellow

Yes very common this with Tinnitus.

It’s really positive that you can manage your Tinnitus during the day.

You’re well on your way to living well with Tinnitus.

The fact that your “Dreading it” may be part of the problem.

What works for me is trying to re frame what’s happening in a positive way.

You’re getting sleep and that’s brilliant. Yes it’s there when you wake up but you know it will move on once you’re up and eventually it will stop bothering you when you wake.

Other things that work for me are writing a list of what’s gone well today before bed. Don’t lie there listening to your Tinnitus just get straight up and crack on with your day

I hope this helps - be kind to yourself

Thank you. I will try and be more positive. Mostly my T is with me all day but I have a white noise machine that helps.

Same here. Worst on waking and should get better during day. Don't dread it being like that. Take comfort in the routine of it. Now if tinnitus was variable in the respect that if could be different levels at any time - pure random - that I would dread!

Thank you. I am starting to be more positive because T has its own routine and I am slowly understanding it. I've had T now since November and hopefully getting my ENT appointment soon .

That's the spirit. I'm sixteen months in and it took me a few weeks to realise tinnitus is not me but someone else in the room I don't care for and who does their own thing, like it or not. I'm retired now, but several working colleagues in the past like that (none simultaneously thankfully) helped there!

I love your attitude towards T.

yes every day, but my tinnitus never ever goes,

Same for me. I think it’s because having a break from it during sleep makes us more aware again in the mornings. Such a troublesome condition.

you're not alone, same feeling as mine.

Hello and yes mine is worse when I wake up. Worse when I think about it and worse when tired and stressed which seems to feed right back into my T.

Sometimes feels you cannot win or are trapped, however, focusing on the positive is a good thing. The fact that you can lose it in the day is a positive to be proud of.

I’ve been recommended a walk before bedtime to be helpful, I’ve just not felt like it at the moment.

Best and take care of yourself.

Thank you for replying. Yes walking seems to benefit me too especially on a bad T day. Yesterday was horrible and today my T has gone higher so bearable. I wish you a very happy new year.

Yes, it's the same for me as well. I sleep ok, so I'm thankful for that, but I awake to the radio (talk radio, not music) and if the news is interesting, I focus less on the T. It's a mental effort, but I put the anxious depressing thoughts out of my mind, and have to remind myself that I will feel better when I'm up. Good luck, and a happy new year!

Thank you for these encouraging words. It is a very mental exhausting process as all of us with T know too well. Happy New year to you too.

Hi, it’s the the same for me, as soon as I open my eyes it’s there, at first I thought it was just me that had T as soon as waking and feared it must be something serious in my head but after having MRI scans everything was fine. Now I just accept that the T is going to be there when I go to sleep and there when I wake up. Like other people have said that once you get up and focus on other things your T is still there but fades more into the background. I have recently moved home and during this period my T was up to a 8/9 but now having settled into our new property my T is slowly reducing its volume. Strange thing is this T, but I know I can live a near normal life.

Hi thanks for this as it is helpful to know it's not just you and thinking something serious is going on. I am learning each day just to accept T and not giving attention to it.

I have it constantly - one side mostly but occasionally I can hear it in the other ear too.

Remember when you were a kid and you’d put a seashell to your ear to ‘hear the sea’? Well I have that shell permanently attached to my ear! It’s a constant ….. very occasionally it’ll seem to be ‘retuning’ itself up or down and then settle again.

I like quiet so without other people around or TV or radio it’s quite obvious.

When I’m distracted by work or others it’s less so.

Thankfully it doesn’t affect my sleep.

I’m told there’s no cure so we have to learn to live alongside it. I do wonder why there seems to be such a blanket acceptance that it’s incurable. Is anyone working to find a cure?

I can remember my grandfather complaining of “ringing” in his ears. Is it hereditary?

My T likes crickets and frogs so that is very calming and I have a white noise machine on most day's. Also T seems to go calm with the fan oven on. T hates TV and loud noises. My nan had Tinnitus and my mum had it for 2 years so maybe mine is also hereditary.

This happens to me every time I fall asleep even if it only nap for a few minutes.

An audiologist I spoke to had this theory, she said that primeval man was most vulnerable to his predators when he was sleeping so on awakening his senses would be their highest peak of alertness and this has been passed down throughout the generations, and if a person has hearing loss and the brain is not receiving the audio messages from the ears it goes into hyper drive and produces the Big T.

He is not wrong. I am just waiting for my ENT appointment and hopefully they can throw some light on what is causing this. Hope you have a very happy new year.

This is a minor point, but your tinnitus probably only APPEARS to be worse in the mornings. This is significant because it means that you have better ways of dealing with it than if it really were worse. Mine is the same all day pretty much every day, but there are times when I really notice it, such as when I wake up in the morning. Until I start doing things and moving around it's very obvious and then for much of the day I forget about it as I'm busy. But if I'm doing something that makes me think of it - such as looking at or writing on this forum, or finish doing something that I was engrossed it, it is once again very noticeable. The trick for me is to keep involved in whatever I'm doing. I don't use background noise at all as a mask as since I had a Cochlear Implant a little over a year ago music isn't something I can keep on in the background. So I've adjusted to it.

do you sleep in silence? Mr T hates silence and does his war dance!

Yellowstonesad profile image
Yellowstonesad in reply toKellythecat-74

I have at most one or two nights a week when my T is hardly there, so going to sleep is nice. Other nights it's very loud and I turn on my white noise machine and take a sleeping pill.

funny how T can vary so much in volume with lots of people . Mine is constant .So when you sleep with hardly there T and silence in the room ? ,whats MrT doing in the morning ?
