My child screaming.

I have a 1 YO son, and his high-pitched screaming and shouting can hurt my ears. I'm terrified my T will get worse. I'm starting to get scared to be around him at times. Does anyone else have small children and if so how do you cope? I am so depressed getting this T at this time in my life. I just want to be able todo the things i did 3 months ago.

Hi there. You are young to have T . Mine started in my late 30s but generally people get it later in life. I have a 1 year old niece who I see regularly and she's very loud. I put on my Alpine ear muffs as soon as I see her little face crumple. I realise it's not so simple for you as you live with your son but it might be worth investing in ear muffs for the louder times. They cost £20 from Alpine.

I try and plug my ears when he starts screaming, but as you said ,it's easier said then done, as i look afterhim all day. I'm hoping my T will still improve even with all the loud noises, I'm just feeling low about it.

I tried plugs at first but muffs are easier and quicker to put on - even if you're holding a little nipper . Just a thought. It's understandable you feel so low. Take heart. It's tough in the early days but it definitely gets easier . Whatever your situation.

That's a good point, i meant i put my fingers in my ears, lol. I can't have earplugs in all the time. I have some muffs, just makes me so disconnected from everything other than my T. Im holding on to things getting better, that's all i suppose i can do at this moment.

utdmad89 - are you a ManU fan?

Have a look back at the very helpful comments made to you after your earlier post.

Yes you are feeling your son’s noise is aggravating the T. The way you feel at the moment, ANY noise will probably aggravate it, so perhaps you need to think how lucky you are that you have a child to love. Pick him up and smell the wonderful child smell (with a clean nappy). Take him out and have some long walks with him in the buggy - it will calm him and you. So it’s raining - listen to the wonderful sound of the rain on the trees, listen out for any birds you can hear. Robins sing throughout the winter so can you hear one or more?

After the holidays ring the British Tinnitus Association for more help.

I am a Man utd fan, yes! I have looked, and I'm trying to stay positive and think of it as just a noise in my head. I know how lucky i am he is in my life, and i do hold him and play with him. Long walks aren't easy where i live with lots of hills, and i have a back problem. But i try to at weekends. I will call the BTA, i just wanted some advice from others with small children, or maybe even some success stories with living with T and having little children. Thanks for the advice.

I hope others may have some hints - I found it no worse than any other irritating noise like inescapable pop music in shops. You just have to think positive thoughts.

My husband has been a MU fan for seventy years. For his eightieth birthday he went to MU this week, seeing them live for the first time ever. What an experience!

My sons highpitched screams and cries are more than irritating they actually hurt my ears a lot. I'm trying to keep positive thoughts very hard at this time, though. Sounds amazing ,i hope he enjoyed himself!probably something i won't be able to do again as Old Trafford is very, very loud.

Hi Utdmad89

I know the feeling 8 have a baby, 3 and 6 year old who love screaming / shouting and baby cries and I did worry about the effects of it on my T however I don't get chance to over think because I have my hands full and just have to get on with it.

It's a pretty isolating situation as people around me don't understand T and it's effects. My T started in September and I am adjusting still and finding a way to cope and accept it. At 38 years old I feel disheartened how will I cope. I'm still figuring it out, your not alone.

Should you need to talk we are here ☺️

Have a great Christmas 🎄 everyone luv to you and families 💜

Merry Christmas. I live in New York and I am part of this group. I feel for you since I experience increase in my T when around hight pitched noises. And it seams to be everywhere. I hosted Christmas Eve at my home and had a screaming child running around. It literally hurt my ears. I ended up with a headache. So your not alone. I don’t have any medical advise but I do want you to know it’s real. My family doesn’t seam to understand how much loud noises / people talking loudly / screaming children even beautiful music physically bothers me. Which is so frustrating and sad. I want to be part of it all. I guess with your situation as best you can talk to your very young child and say Shhhhh. Indoor voices. That’s what I tried to do last night even with the adults. Haha. Best wishes

in reply toUltrasonography

My son doesn't understand shh or inside voice at this moment I'm afraid. Thanks for the suggestions. I guess it's something i just have to learn to live with.

acoustic ear plugs? You can get them on Amazon, I use at concerts, they block out high and loud sounds so it doesn’t hurt your ears.

in reply toMaryDandy2

I can't use them all day, though.

Oh dear! Bearing in mind that a child's screams are a force of nature designed to persuade an adult to do something either willingly or not, you're in a pickle if your son's output triggers your T!

The volume and pitch of a baby's or child's scream or constant crying is intended to grate, to generate discomfort and to get right on an adult's nerves. In my experience, it achieves all three rapidly, alongside fright if something serious is generating the noise.

I wonder if it is the anxiety and stress that your son's noise output generates within you that is exacerbating the T, perhaps more so than the volume/pitch of the noise?

How about wearing some very good noise cancelling over-ear headphones? If these work for you, they may keep you incredibly calm, which in turn might have a calming effect on your son, at least until he yanks them off your head!

I use noise cancelling headphones when I'm on long journeys via public transport. I think they're marvellous. I can choose complete silence or listen to something pleasant of my choosing. The over-ear variety can be easily slung around the neck for quick access whenever environmental noise becomes intrusive. I think Sony's product is very good, but there are plenty of other makes on the market.

I hope you soon find some relief, one way or another.
