masking noise: would anyone use with earphone... - Tinnitus UK
masking noise
hi there. During the day if my t is really bad I use Bluetooth earphones. I just have one earphone in my left ear and that way I can still watch tv etc. all the best.
I think earphones (that go into the ear canal) have the potential to cause irritation, just as hearing aids can until you get used to them. Myself, I prefer headphones but only ever listen to masking sounds via a speaker. Obviously, if you're on the move, earphones will be the most practical solution.
I avoid using headphones to allow ears and auditory system to relax. A game changer for me was a white noise machine ( only £22 from Amazon) . This tool allows me to "replace my missing silence" with neutral sound. Switching off phone, tv , laptop and spending time with neutral sound, meditating, stretching , reading and cooking helps me settle the nervous system a core factor in tinnitus habituating. For more on this check out "Quietin" application via your app store.
My tinnitus took me to an audiologist who identified moderate hearing loss and I now have bluetooth hearing aids. I wear these both during the day and at night and find them most useful at night to help me sleep by masking the T with various nature sounds (water with birdsong most nights). Whether or not this is good for my ears I wouldn't know, but I can sleep with the hearing aids in without too much discomfort. I've tried just putting my phone under my pillow instead but that's not as effective and I don't like to disturb my husband's sleep. Earbuds just end up wrapped round my neck and aren't very comfortable. I've also tried the pillow speakers (too quiet) and the bluetooth headband (that just felt weird and kept moving out of place). The hearing aids are great for listening to podcasts too!
