Hi SUS

It's a difficult one - much like tinnitus, alcohol can have a different effect on everybody. For some people it loosens inhibitions and that in turn helps them navigate otherwise difficult social interactions. For others, it can have that effect but subsequently have a depressive come down which might make people more introspective and conscious of their tinnitus.

I think most people are doing the best that they can to get by at the moment, in a world which is still in turmoil and strife. Trying to have some control over your tinnitus is a good ambition to work towards and if alcohol isn't the way to do that for you, then you've learned something useful which can be part of your self-care tool kit.

Why not look for other ways to relax and see if they help you feel more like you can manage your tinnitus?

Sorry to hear you're feeling down SUS776 Spikes are hard to manage at the best of times. I've learnt that a small glass relaxes me but any more depresses me. I didn’t drink a drop pre troublesome T . So it might just be a case of working out what your limits are. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi SUS776,

My T has been spiking since December of last year. I just had a very bearable hiss to begin with, but now I have like a high pitched whistle, with the hiss in the background. Mine can start off quieter in a morning, but by the end of the day it can be raging!

I am actually now trying to lead a more healthy lifestyle. Change of diet and a little more exercise, just to see if it has a positive impact on my T. It's early days, but it's worth a try. Surely it can't make things worse...well I'd like to think not :)

When did you notice your T spike? Was it after you had been drinking wine? If so, then it sounds like it could possibly be the contributing factor. If it started when you weren't drinking wine, then maybe the wine isn't helping it to settle down. I don't want to sound preachy and you probably already know this, but it sounds like you may need to find a way of coping without relying on the wine so much. I know it's hard and we all have to find our way of coping and managing the best way we can, even if the way we choose isn't an ideal one.

I hope your T settles down soon. I know how you are feeling. It can be a day to day struggle when all we want and need is a little peace and quiet.

All the best :)

Cutting back is a good start and see how you get on.

You should be able to enjoy a glass of wine without having to think if it will affect your T or not. It's like our lives don't become our own anymore and is dictated to by the dreaded T!! It does tend to have a certain amount of control over us, but it's how we are able to deal with it and manage it, so it doesn't get out of control...if that makes sense haha!

Yes totally agree you feel t has a control and l don't like to be controlled hopefully next few days l will feel better l think ya have to have these hurdles to learn how to cope thank-you for listening x

I’m with you on this! One or two glasses of wine - great! Any more ….. oh dear.

Another pointer to relax you, SUS, without alcohol. Is a recently published article on relaxation which the British Tinnitus Association has recently published. Go to their website and put relaxation into the search box. It’s the second one down. You might find something that resonates with you.

Hi sorry you are struggling with your T spike at the moment. I enjoy a glass of wine myself but have had to be more careful not to drink too much because of vertigo and T which can be difficult in a social situation as if you are chatting away with friends it's too easy to drink more than you meant to drink. I think that everything in moderation is a good way to try to live your life when you are going through a difficult time as denying yourself completely makes even more problems but it's hard work. I hope things get better for you soon take care.

I’ve experienced the same. Alcohol affects the inner ear, for me at the time, it’s a distraction.! But the next day it’s payback with 🐝…. I went 10 days abstinence & the noise in my head Quietened significantly.

Alcohol is a depressant.: I’m going to do my best to go tea total again….

Stay positive

Daniel

Hi Suz I’m lucky in that getting plastered helps with my tinnitus & Hyperacusis - very dangerous! 😄 try guided meditation if you practice it and get into it properly it’s very very effective. There are lots of guided meditations to try on YouTube but I would start with an audio CD from the king of guided meditation- John Kabbat Zinn. If you like him and can afford it he has a whole course on the masterclass website which is not cheap but I bet it’s great.

I used to record my spike periods of tinnitus but I stopped that as it made me think about my tinnitus daily. Now I feel that my tinnitus is more constant rather than rising and falling. Yes I’ve had nights when I’ve taken to alcohol but more at nights in hope that I sleep better. Main problem though is that it gives me nocturia which is frequent visits to the toilet during the night. I still occasionally have a strong beer or two at night before bed but do try to get out most days for walks as a means of distraction to my tinnitus sounds. It’s not easy for all of us but I do hope that you can find a solution to your current issues.
