Tinnitus, Migraines & Sumatriptan

Hi everyone,

My T started during a 3 day migraine attack. On the 3rd day I woke up with a high pitched tone in my left ear and still had the migraine. I had been taking Sumatriptan to relieve the migraine, which I have been taking for migraines for quite a number of years.

I was just wondering if anyone else's T started in the same way and do they find that taking Sumatriptan now spikes their T? I also find that having a migraine also spikes my T.

T is such a cruel thing to have and I find it very draining at times :(

I haven’t taken this drug but I used to have migraines - they disappeared as soon as I was in the menopause.Any stressful occasion - and migraine is stressful! - might get tinnitus as a sort of side effect. Tinnitus thrives on stress, and the more you think about it the more prominent it can become.

You’re probably already familiar with breathing and relaxation techniques and you should think about these. The T might well just fade into the background when you’re feeling better.

Have a look at the British tinnitus Association website for more hints and tips.

Hi Happyrosie,

Thank you for your reply.

I totally agree with you...stress plays a big part in T levels. I have had my T since May of last year now and I was dealing with it quite well, but since Christmas I have had spike after spike. I've had a few days here and there where it's been bearable and then it ramps up again.

We just have to deal with it the best we can.

Mine started with blood pressure medication and was further increased when I started statins. I think in your case it's more likely to have been the migraine as you had been taking the medication for a while. As to why this time and not before, that's the million dollar question. When they answer that question they will have found the cure for it. Mine gets louder if I don't do exercise and if I stay for too long in front of a computer or TV. Also depending on what I eat. x

Hi SimToTheWorld,

Thank you for your reply.

I have found that when I sit down to watch TV at night my T gets louder. It's quite annoying as that is the time when I would like it to be quieter. I was also thinking that diet might play a big part in how my T reacts. I think that maybe something I need to look at.

I just take each day as it comes and pray for more good days than bad x

hi - I watch TV with subtitles now as I find the sound pushes up my T and I dont listen to music anymore. Theres lots of info online about food and tinnitus the usual suspects such as salt , sugars, caffeine are bad and also too much 'glutamate' . I found the diet info online about glutamate quite complicated as it included lots of healthy stuff as well that would be impossible to avoid
