I'm new here and developed tinnitus from ear infection, I think Optomize ear spray made it worse!

Hi guys, I've had pulsatile tinnitus on my right ear for 7 years but that doesn’t bother me. It started in mid March when I had starting having muffled hearing on my left ear and it went after 3 days leaving a low buzzing sound for a week. I was worried at this point couldn’t sleep without fan on and saw my GP and she said had discharge and redness and gave me Optomize ear spray by this point the buzzing lowered and I took the spray for 7 days and my tinnitus got worse with high pitch hissing. Went to see GP again after a month (at this point could not sleep with the hissing) she checked my ears and I told her couldn't sleep she said didn’t want to giving me sleeping tablets because can be addictive and and said sleep with white noise and take piriteze and Nytol. It’s now June can’t sleep with fan on makes the high pitch worse and white noise doesn’t mask it. The only saviour is my sleeping headphones and listening to high pitch tinnitus sound therapy on YouTube which gives 4-5hrs sleep. I’ve not been able to habituate just masking it and lost 8kg from the stress of it😭😩 I just found out Optomize has neomycin which ototoxic to ears and wish I never taken it !

Why did your Dr give you piriteze ? I take piriteze for hay fever and allergies . Bit odd .

Piriton and piriteze are both for hay fever and allergies .Both do the same thing.

You can search this site for Optomize and see other people’s experience of using it. Some positive comments and some negative.

Tell me about it, if I known optomize could damage ears wouldn’t of taken it!

Has your tinnitus remained the same pitch or calmed down? Mine is a constant high hiss

I have had pain on and off in my right ear for 3 years,. It is not terrible but I want it to go. The gp looked and recommended using a decongestant. No good. That was over 2 years ago. Last year I had various telephone consultations and was given a couple of courses of oral antibiotics. No good. Then given otomize. After using it for 5 days the tinnitus started. It has stayed constant since then. The doctors deny it was the drops. A couple of junior gps I saw said yes it can cause it . I read up about neomycin and wished I had done so before I took it. I did a yellow form on line to report side effects. The same week I got tinnitus in the left ear after having micro suction at specsavers. Not happy.

My GP also denied the Optomize caused tinnitus and said to live with it, like you now have tinnitus on both ears the high pitch hiss is worse than my pulsatile tinnitus and am miserable and anxious☹️

Hi Fi_low

I had a similar experience having been prescribed Optomize. It definitely made my tinnitus louder. I was really upset knowing that had been prescibed a product that made my T worse! After about four months either the loudness diminished or I habituated to the louder sounds. The doctor said it couldn't have been the Optomize spray - but I certainly disagree. Patients with tinnitus should not be prescribed Optomize - far too risky! My T settled down again after four months - hope you likewise improve Fi_low. Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement, the tinnitus is so high pitch driving me up the wall! I hope it settles down already 4 months 😓 never had T in my left ear so still pretty raw.
