Has anyone had the op for deadening the eardrum (Was on offer years ago)

Hi all

Perhaps this should end up in the General tinnitus box. Many moons ago I was offered an operation to null my eardrum, I was told (from memory) that it completely takes away the noise. I think you will never hear again from that ear, but no more T. I'm not sure if it is still done, but my concern was 1) vertigo following the op. 2) Pandora's box, opening it and finding you have jumped from the frying pan into the fire. (Got rid of T, but now have another problem because of this).

Has anyone gone down this road? I ask this because this may be the last resort option for Davidus who has a quite different T, 2 to 3 different sounds. This may be worth looking into further by a specialist.

What was your experience?

Also, I'm sure the British tinnitus assn wouldn't mind sharing with America on this occasion.

Crumbs, this seems bizarre.

Are you sure it wasn't a perforated eardrum, which can result in tinnitus (T), that was fixed with a surgical procedure?

I cannot imagine that any ENT surgeon in the UK would knowingly damage someone's hearing apparatus unless the alternative was life-threatening, e.g. brain tumour.

Don't be fooled into thinking that inducing deafness in an ear means that T will go away. T is thought to be phantom noise generated by nerve pathways in the brain rather than the ears. It is reported that people with profound deafness experience T far more than those with acute hearing.

definitely sounds like i've got something wrong here, but i haven't got a perforated eardrum. Thinking it shouldn't go in the tinnitus box, but the recycling box.
