The good, the bad and the ugly.

Hello folks. Getting closer to Christmas and the ending of another year. It is a funny time of the year and not one that is full of joy for everyone. It seems that all our emotions are magnified. If you are happy, then you feel really happy. If you are sad, then you feel really sad. Lonely, then really lonely, Get the picture.

It has got me thinking about the service that I received over the years in relation to my T. The Ugly was a Head Audiologist who said that my T was a harmless condition and said to ignore it. The Bad, A trainee Counsellor who said my T was a just a little bird on my shoulder and that I was not to pay any attention to it. The Good, an really empathetic ENT doctor who ordered the audiologist to issue me with NHS hearing AID maskers stating that even if they helped 1% then that was better than nothing.

I hope that you all have good times over the Christmas holidays. Be interested to hear about your experiences of the Good, the bad and the Ugly with help that you have received with your T. No naming and shaming please!! Keep comments general and not specific to individuals.

My NHS tinnitus 'therapist' gave me a couple of useful snippets, but mostly it was meaningless fluff - 'If you're having a bad day, just move your attention elsewhere - ooh look, there's a bird in that tree; I wonder where that man's walking to?; what am I having for dinner?'

Not really good, bad or ugly, but I don't recall the sequel - 'The Pointless, The Asinine and The Irrelevant'.

Happy Christmas Ade.

Hello Ruud1boy

Wouldn't it be good if these therapists and audiologists had to wear headphones with T playing hissing, buzzing, ringing, whistling etc on a loop for 24hrs!!! We could then suggest they just ignore it or think about something else. I think that they would be better at their jobs if they had a shared experience, albeit a short one.

Happy Christmas to you.

Hope that 2020 brings you peace and quiet.

Hi Ade

My good would be my hearing therapist who has seen me over some really bad times, she had t from a child so she understood. The bad is she's just retired. The ugly is any one who has have told me to learn to live with it.

In all my 38 years with t, I'm really struggling at the moment. Christmas is not a good time. There's so much to do, but just not feeling it this year. Sposed to go into work at 7.30 this morning, but couldn't face it. HATE letting it control me like this but I'll get through this bad phase as I always seem to.

There's got to be more research done for this. I can't believe I've got to feel like this for the rest of my life. I'm 61 now and would like even a small reduction in the incessant noise in my ears.

Take care

Ingrid xx

Merry Christmas to All - my good is my partner who has gone through this hell with me for the past year and supported me . The bad is that the maskers they have provided , don’t mask to the low tones I’ve got recently. The ugly is the ENT telling me , it’s all in my mind and that it’s psychological! ( he laughed). Told me that I was causing the 5/6 tones and I shouldn’t listen to them and just to ignore them ! ......

Anyway, here’s to a Merry Christmas 🎄 and a quieter New Year for all xxx

Merry Christmas to you too. I forgot to mention my long suffering partner and my children as well. Through bad times they literally get me back to the land of he living. They simply will not let me wallow in self pity. It's a horrible thing, but we get through it somehow.

Persevere with the maskers as they do help. They can be pre-programmed with different sounds as well, so might be worth a trip back to see your audiologist.

Hears hoping for positive research news for 2020 🤞

It is funny. A dentist would not tell you to ignore a tooth ache. It is very much real. It is a signal received by your brain. You can't just forget about it. watch Tv, read a book, enjoy an evening etc. So why do these people think that your brain can just ignore a loud noise in your head!!! Do these people think we choose to have this conditions!!!.

That is my rant over for today. Woody has reminded me to mention my partner in the "Good" list. Without her I would have lost the good fight. She has been there throughout all the dark times. She must get really fed up with my moaning and must have heard my story a 1000 times.

Peace and quiet to all.

My poor husband has definitely suffered with me over the years. Now he's got t and I really worry that I've given it to him!

Hi Ade, the good for me is the medic who did not dismiss my sudden-onset tinnitus, trembling, cognitive decline and nausea as psychological and worked dam**d hard to find out what had happened to me. Actually, there are two goods; this forum is another one. The bad are the GPs who didn't know what was going on with me, so got together to unanimously dismiss my symptoms as 'idiopathic' or 'psychological' instead of referring me for thorough investigations. They were, and remain, unqualified to diagnose my condition. The Ugly is the sheer lack of research being done into tinnitus along with the general failure on the part of the medical profession to recognize that it destroys quality of life for a lot of people and should never be shrugged off by those who simply don't hear it so don't know what they're talking about.

A peaceful and quiet(ish) Christmas to all!

Well said Bridget. One ENT Doctor suggested that I keep a diary of the ringing in my ears." Day one. Ears rung all day. Days 2, See day 1, Day 3 See day 2".

I fully agree with you. They don't take out condition that seriously!!

Happy Christmas

Ade

hey all, i think we should be just naming the "good"....they need recognition...lol..

well, my "good" has been my MP, only one who seems to actually listen, not judge, just listen..Listen to the problem(s), check the facts..and act!! wow,...how easy was that?..NHS?? so find someone thats on your side and drop everyone else, they're stress aint worth it.

So, Big respect...Ronnie Cowan....SNP

Unfortunately, for most of us, the "bad" seems to be "our" audiologist or person in that field, mine was dismissive, arogent and had a bedside manner of a House of Fraser employee.

The "ugly" is for all the "organisations" that claim to be there for you... Governments, Benefit advisers, Banks, Major corporations, that only have eyes for seeing how much money they can put in their own pockets.

This truely is a mad shitty world

But merry chistmas everybody

Really good point. We should be naming the good. They deserve recognition for great work. Several people have replied thanking their partners for putting up with then. My partner has been great.

There has been a lot of negative comments about Audiologists. Why fid they go yo that profession if they don't like yo hear people moan about hearing problems! Nobody goes to see them with good hearing.

it seems to be their dismissive manner that is the problem. They may be no recognised cure but s bit of Tlc goes a long way.

Enough of moaning

I wish you a merry Christmas and heres to peace and quiet in 2020
