Ear drops have brought on Tinnitus.

Hi.

Had blocked ears so started Sodium bicarbonate drops but since then severe ringing (which makes watching TV difficult) has started I think in one ear. Syringing was unsuccessful yesterday so a further two weeks of the drops has been prescribed before the ringing. I don't use ear plugs but haven't been in a loud environment in years and have my headphones settings at half at best(as loud as I need it to be able hear it). Will the ringing stop when the wax is removed or is it here to stay - I never had it when it was blocked before I put the drops in. It is driving me mad.

The ringing seems even worse today - please someone reassure me that in two weeks when it is syringed again the ringing will go. I am not going to be left with permanent ringing louder than talking in the same room is?

I have read before that syringing can cause tinnitus so not sure if it will go? Why did you have them syringed I wouldn’t touch ears with drops or anything after knowing what I now do 😢 I know how you feel it’s awful

The ringing started before the syringing so it’s not that causing it.

Any head noise is going to be louder because the ear canals are blocked. Having said that, is there any chance you can have the wax suctioned out rather than syringed. This, to me, is a much better way to remove impacted wax and more thorough. I also learnt from an audiologist at the Tinnitus Clinic in London that when I have a high pitched extra sound (my tinnitus is normally the hissing gas fire sound which is to do with the neurological /audiogicall area in the brain) it is fluid rebalancing in the cochlea chambers in the inner ear ... it does pass, thank goodness - and I think yours will or at least get much quieter..

Not offered by my gp and anyway my parents would never permit to do it unless the gp prescribed it. I am 22 but due to austism don’t have the freedom of a most people.

It'll probably go once your ears have been cleared of wax, but you do need to be careful about how you go about that. I'd ask if they can be cleared manually rather than syringing or microsuction.

Try to get an urgent appointment at an Ear, Noise and Throat clinic - by referral of your GP, where impacted wax could be removed by a special "pick" - but it must be a specialist to do this.

I’ll try and get a gp appointment next week but I suspect they say syringing booked for the following week has to happen first before they would refer me to anything.

I put oil in my ears for three days x 4 x a day and then I used my Waterpik on my ears. I used the LOWEST setting and the earwax dislodged very easily. My tinnitus stopped immediately. It came back a week later but barely audible. I am really happy as I’ve had tinnitus for 10 years.

It is extremely difficult for any professional to remove impacted ear wax with a curette (special pic) unless it has been softened. It is also dangerous and could damage your eardrum. Once the ear wax has been softened, I find it very easy to flush it out entirely by using a Waterpik on the low setting. Just apply oil four or five times a day with an Earol kit and after about three days if you notice some ear wax on the Earol applicator, time for the Waterpik.
