Tinnitus

I recently went to a nightclub and stood next to the speakers for around 3 hours (I know very stupid) and since that night I’ve had a buzzing/static in my ear and a sensation of my ears needing to be popped. I have a doctors appointment booked but I’m just curious if anyone thinks it is permanent damage or if it will fade

As Clint Eastwood once said, 'Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?'

If it's not something you've been doing on a regular basis over the years, you might get away with it and the noise will fade over the next few days. That's most people's normal experience of tinnitus. On the other hand, you might be stuck with it. Keep your fingers crossed.

I’ve had this noise for 3 days now, trying to stay optimistic and not concentrate on it but it’s very difficult. Fingers crossed it goes off but only myself to blame I guess.

Hopefully you’ve not got any permanent damage from that one night and that your hearing returns to normal soon. Either way don’t repeat that as it’s what I did when going to live music concerts and dance halls when I was younger. It’ll catch up with you and cause tinnitus to occur if you do. I had this combined with working in a shipyard before welding became the way to repair ships. Constant noises from caulkers, drillers and riveters drove me nuts and ear muffs issued were useless. Good luck in not ending up like me!

Thank you for the response, I have definitely learnt my lesson, and will remember ear plugs! The noise hasn’t yet stopped (currently day 3) but just taking everyday as it comes. It’s crazy how much you take your hearing for granted until it’s gone or something like this happens! Out of curiousity also, my ears crackle/pop every time I swallow, very similar to the feeling of landing in a plane, was this something you ever experienced?

My ears don’t crackle or pop at all as my tinnitus sounds are constant and only “disappear” when I distract myself by constantly doing things to concentrate my mind on other things. I listen to the radio a lot, mainly people talking rather than music, and I find that helps. I also play games on my laptop and go on websites to occupy my thoughts elsewhere. Ear plugs at music events in future may help but you also may try hearing aids with masking sounds if your noises persist longer. If they do then make an appointment with your doctor and get a referral to your local ENT hospital department. That way you’ll get a proper assessment from a hearing test and the audio gram should show what hearing losses if any that you have. Hopefully you’re not kept up at night too with the ringing in your ears. If so you may need to upload apps like Sound Oasis and Chillax to calm you down through the night. Good luck whatever happens!
