I use the Oasis sound generator at night with pillow speakers and find water sounds or white noise works best for myself. During the day I now have a hearing aid which I have just started with to correct hearing loss in the tinnitus affected ear and just try to keep as busy and occupied as possible to distract attention from it.
I project myself into 'tomorrow ' and keep myself busy. I tell myself I've got through today I'll get through other days. I try to keep positive and do things I enjoy as much as possible.
To help me sleep I use herbal sleep tea or things like herbal nytol etc. I keep a packet of amytryptaline for use occasionally on holiday or when I've had a particularly noisy day. One packet lasts me about 6 months!
I go about my life as completely normal and try not to let it stop me from doing things until living with it on a daily basis becomes easier as time goes by.
I use a hearing aid with built in masker which has 3 settings, 1 is hearing aid on it's own and I use this when my T is low otherwise I switch it too the pink noise or ocean waves, if its loud. To help me sleep i use the oasis sound generator ( which is also an alarm clock) set on rainfall and on the 90 minute setting and most nights, I've fallen asleep before it goes off. If I am having trouble sleeping I have a drink of cherry juice as this is full of natural melatonin which is the bodies natural sleep hormone. I find having some kind of background noise helps with the distraction plus reading a book before going to sleep.
Otherwise I find if I keep myself busy, most of the time I can ignore the tinnitus, but times when I can't I just keep telling myself tomorrow will be a better day.
I haven't let it stop me from doing things I enjoy, but I suppose I'm more wary about noisy environments than I used to be.
I have only had tinnitus for a few months and most days, it's very loud and intrusive. On a daily basis, I take a zinc supplement, 10mg of Amitriptyline to help me sleep and I also take CBD oil orally and by vaping. I have also discovered that a very hot steamy bath seems to help reduce the volume especially when the tinnitus spikes. I try and stay positive, eat a balanced diet with lots of fruit and veg and generally try to keep busy and focused on hobbies. I am also getting twin hearing aids later this month which hopefully will prove effective!
Call me old-fashioned during the day I get on with my life the Tinnitus noise just get's pushed into the background outside noise is great for Tinnitus your brain listens to the noise and starts to lose interest in the Tinnitus noise. However at night can be different so I put on my old fan and generally, this works sometimes I use an App just to mix it up a bit. Last year my Tinnitus got really loud causing bad Headaches this I think was caused by stress and Tinnitus feeds on Anxiety my GP prescribed Amitriptyline which has helped my Tinnitus lever is now back to its normal level we have to except that they will be good and bad day's with Tinnitus it's all about your own self-adjustment understanding what you are dealing with and how to have some control over Tinnitus and always asked for advice
I cannot add anything to the above helpful posts - distraction always works for me and, of course, a good night of sleep is essential. Tinnitus loves silence and boredom! Angela xx
im still struggling to manage mine . I do try to distract my brain but hoise generators and pillow speakers just don't work for me, I need to take 10mg of zopiderm sleeping tabs to get to sleepbut still manage to wake up during the night. my T. is very loud and I have 2 hearing aids both with white noise set at 75 db, just below my T. level I have struggled for 5 years to find a good method of distraction but for a while I sued mt drumsticks on a practice pad playing some rudiments and this worked a bit, I would be very grateful for any suggestions for more distratction, any louder noise in bedroom upsets my wife or I would try the t.v. BUT I must say ive never felt tired in 5 years since I got T. I just don't nod off at all thanks. Crawford.
Three and a half years on I have pretty much come to terms with my tinnitus.
When I was bad at the beginning I used to read and re-read success stories over and over again - always helped to know that people managed to get their lives back.
And I used to tell myself that I didn`t mind the noises even though, of course, I did.
And even now I still have the radio or tv on most of the time.
The little things matter where health is involved and preparation matters with Tinnitus. For example, making sure your bedroom is the right temperature and your sound machine is on the right settings can be the difference between a good or bad nights sleep. Moreover, and crucial, dry out your sheets and pillows as damp bedding is uncomfortable. What makes a difference for me is pillow height, and one or two very thin pillows is conductive for good breathing. Breathing through the nose in rhythmic fashion has an hypnotic influence on the mind and acts as a distraction to Tinnitus but it hss to be automatic with no effort on your part. If there is any effort in the practice then it will fail. Also, try to make sure you have left at least 4hours after eating before bedtime, your not dehydrated and make sure your bedroom is pitched black, as even a tiny crack of light will disrupt sleep.
Make sure your eating healthy food . I discovered recently that the only way to get all the goodness out of vegatables was to eat them raw, or as an alternative, to cook them and sprinkle ' Mustard Powder ' over them. And it appears to be working ! And finally, I find if my Tinnitus is loud I then resort to my tried and tested formula: reinforcing suggestions that I will fall asleep because I always do and always have no matter the circumstance. This works on a subconscious level and I tee it of by remembering various similar occasions of drifting off into the twilight state .
I hope this helps some of you into a fixed rhythm. I find I have a more ordered life and less spontaneous one since Tinnitus and Hyperacusis entered it. I also have EHS, Exploding Head Syndrome, wherby, I hear loud bangs which waken me up instantly from sleep. Thankfully, these don't occur too often.
I hope this is of some small help to you guys suffering pre-habituated Tinnitus,
