Hi Gillysboy. Yes you should see your doctor. He won't do any tests as such but will check in your ear for any signs of an ear infection or wax buildup. If nothing is found (or if there is but treatment doesn't resolve it) he should refer you for an appointment with Ear Nose & Throat (ENT) dept. at a hospital. It's quite common to have to wait 2 or 3 months for an appointment. They will do a hearing test and look in your ears again. They will probably book you in for a MRI scan. If by that time your tinnitus hasn't improved you will probably get referred to audiology who should have someone trained to help you deal with your tinnitus.

I agree with John. Your initial check up will allow your doctor to see if your tinnitus is due to wax build up and they will be able to make sure there is not an ear infection. Then they will be able to refer you to your local ENT department for hearing tests.

If you have a branch of the Tinnitus association near you, they are worth checking out as they can be very helpful when you are learning to manage your tinnitus.
