I first experienced a constant ringing in my ears (it appears to be on the left) when I had my ears syringed in 2008. It has recently become worse and sometimes it seems that my left ear is losing some hearing ability.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

My Tinnitus started about 8 years ago and like you syringing and an ear infection started my Tinnitus since then I did have suction which is far better. Have you been to an ENT clinic to have your ears checked lately? as there can give you a hearing check sometimes with Tinnitus you get a feeling of fullness which can give the impression of hearing lost I recently went back to my GP because of headaches and feeling lightheaded because my Tinnitus started to get loud and the frequency was high I was concerned in case there was an increase in wax but my ears were ok If you have concern with the feeling of hearing loss it’s best to have a check-up just to put your mind at rest in the end odds are it’s your Tinnitus that’s making you feel like this. Tinnitus is a weird beast.

My Tinnitus started after ear left ear syringing to remove excess wax, no previous problems, that was a year ago, now stuck with this high pitched ringing in my ears, this practice should be stopped. After complaining, my GP now gets patients to sign a disclaimer, at least my experience might help others to be aware of the dangers of syringing. This condition has affected every area of my life, and I feel sad that I will never experience silence again.

I have not done anything about it so far. It has only really started bothering me over the past 6 months or so. I do intend to see my GP soon and hopefully he will refer me to ENT for further investigation.

I am not expecting them to be able to enlighten me in this regard as most people on this forum and others do not have much success from medical investigation.

Hi, Rob51,

That's exactly how it started with me, and in the left ear too. I don't know if the syringing caused it or just triggered it in some way. I've had my ears syringed since then but to no effect - either good or bad. If you haven't already done so, get your ears checked out by ENT - that's usually the first step. If you can, find ways to relax and distract yourself from this noise - there's plenty of advice on these posts and through the BTA. Welcome to the community.

Thank you for your response.

I have thought about going to an ENT but not done it yet.

I have read somewhere on here that headphones can make it worse - I have been doing audio transcription work for the past four years so think that may have made it worse. I have stopped now but so far no difference.

Do feel free to ask any questions, I hope that you find this a helpful and supportive place to help you manage your tinnitus.

If your hearing has got a little worse (and it happens to most of us as we get older) then that can make the perception of tinnitus louder. The good news is that correcting any hearing loss can really help with the tinnitus, as well as improve your hearing. You can ask your GP for a referral for a hearing test to check.

Hi Rob, yes, I had my ear irrigated last March 2017 by practice nurse at GP for excess wax, no previous problems, with ears, Tinnitus ever since. Why did you need your ear syringed? Kevin

Hi Kevin

I was driving buses and it seemed that my left ear (the one used to hear passengers) was not good so I asked my GP about it and she suggested the irrigation. It was immediately after that that the tinnitus started.

I have made an appointment with the Audiology department at my hospital now as it has become really bad. According to my current GP they may do a scan to detect any possible nerve damage??
