at the end of the day after many many visits to E.N.T.andAUDIOLOGY PSYCHOLOGISTS, andTHERAPISTS, you just have to learn to live with it, audiology,s task is to make sure you have correctly fitted hearing aids and where possible white noise or zen programmes on them but if its loud like mine no hearing aids no matter how responsive and loud the mics are in them will not off set the noise or really help not hearing the noise, some peole may be lucky that the T. can be hidden by everyday sounds but as mines there every single morning i wake i just have to learn to put up with it the fancy name is HABITUATION so sadly no hope for a cure and an eminent professer said ina recent lecture that a cure might be 15 years away at least!!!!!! so you have to help yourselves which i personally find very difficult as my lifes upside down thanks to it so i just go onliving day to day and hoping that i will one day HABITUATE and it wont bother me so much sorry to be so depressing but i suppose thst what thos forus here for. the good the bad and the ugly!!!!!!! cheers craw,

Hi Crawford, it is a mystery to me that there have been so many advances in medicine and yet tinnitus evades a cure. All we get from the researchers are prettily-coloured diagrams of the brain! I can't add anything to what has been said on this forum regarding advice but by posting you know that you are not alone. Love,Angela xx

Yay Craw, you've summed it up entirely correctly for me. What surprises me is how some of the specialists today are still saying exactly the same as the specialists were saying 30 years ago! Ok there's all the new maskers, noise machines and other gadgets on the market plus meds but basically for some the message is still just the same as its always been "Get on with it!" Not very helpful I know especially for newbies but we're all different and I hope everyone eventually finds something that helps or works for them.

Kind regards

Xene

The 'experts' reckon that a cure for T has been about 5yrs away for the last 30yrs. Personally, I do take some solace in the increasing amount of research and understanding of the condition. There are some stats about the number of research papers each year with T as their main subject increasing over time. Before the 80's it was virtually none, up until the 90's it was less than 100 but it's been increasing steadily since then, to the point now where there c.700 papers a year (? I think) published. Modern life is putting more & more people into the firing line of this condition - massive headphones, a frightening lack of awareness, noise, noise, noise everywhere etc - so the problem is only going to get bigger.

Tinnitus is the number 1 compensation claim for American military veterans and they're paying out billions every year, so you would hope they would be able allocate some resource to more research.

Hit the nail on the head. I like to be positive but occasionally the T thing gets me down. My T is pretty much 24/7. No sign of habituation coming my way. Most of the ENT people are great and do their best. However, we would all like a cure.

Wishing you peace and quiet.
