Im due to go to audiology next friday and was wondering how do you know what is the right level to have your masking sound on the hearing aide set at. The settings i have now seems louder than my tinnitus, on the lowest setting but when your there at the appointment its hard to tell if its the right level or not. So would like any advice please.

I can see your point. It is hard to judge the volume when you are in the room talking to the audiologist. I picked the noise that sounded ok. I think that I have a preference for Brown noise. Then the volume was reduced until I could just about hear it. T is a funny thing. When I put the masker in my right ear it has little effect. However, when I put it in the left ear it stops the T in my right ear. I have hyperacusis in my left hear so something strange is going on with my brain.
My view is that it is mainly trial and error. However, most will agree that your masker should be at a volume less than your T.
Hope that it goes well and that you get some peace.
Hi Lesley, hope the appointment goes well. I agree, when I last visited the audiologist to have the masking levels set, I think I got it wrong whilst I was in the audio booth! However, on the days when I wear my masker I set the level to just below my tinnitus. Hey ho, even after over 2 years, it is still all a mystery to me! I just go with the flow of what my brain wants to do ........ most days good after it settles down, some days not so good. Love and best wishes, Angela xx
