I am rather stuck at the moment trying to deal with Hyperacusis and Tinnitus. I am gripped with fear and finding it very difficult to push myself outside to do anything. I want to overcome this desperately as I need to get back to work and living a normal life again. Does anyone have any tips or ideas on how to deal with this ? Is it a case of protecting your ears all the time or just saying sod it , I'm doing it regardless. ?

I think it's a case of taking sensible precautions. You don't want to be wearing earplugs all the time - just when you know you're going to be in a noisy environment like a music gig. I like to have them with me when I go to the cinema in case the volume gets too loud. If I'm out and about and an ambulance goes by with it's siren going I stick my fingers in my ears. You need to get used to everyday sounds and live a normal life again. Mind you, if I'm emptying the dishwasher and accidentally chink two plates together the sound goes right through me and I'm inclined to utter a few choice expletives but then it's forgotten in no time.
For me, I don't over protect and only wear hearing protection when it's appropriate, using power tools or mowing grass. Saying sod it , I'm doing it regardless is also a good strategy that I was able to use successfully. Keeping busy helped me a lot and I still hear it but honestly find it is not bothering me like it did when I felt like I imagine you are feeling. It took me 6 months to get where I am, hang in, just when you think you're doomed it can get better.
Breaking the cycle between noise and the fight or flight reaction is going to be key here. You might want to check out our information sheets on Tinnitus and stress and Hyperacusis over on the BTA website. Our e-learning programme Take on Tinnitus might also be useful for you. takeontinnitus.co.uk

Hi Andy, just wanted to say you are not alone. I have had both tinnitus and hyperacussis now for 4 months and its driving me crazy. I have stopped doing things I used to enjoy and withdrawn from social life-its pretty difficult as I am very sociable and my calendar was full. I have soft earplugs with me in my bag in case I need it, but as you know its too late as the noise happens. I am trying to avoid using them and trying to get used it, as everyone says we should cohabit but its damn difficult. Trouble sleeping lefts me exhausted. My biggest worry now is my job- how do you cope with that? I wish you a peaceful day and that it will disappear as it came
