How long till tablets start to work
I think its a matter of how long you've been ill and also getting your dose right. I have been ill for about 15 years but really ill for about a year. I am gradually increasing the tablets and am going from 75 - 100 on monday. That makes about 6 to 8 weeks so far. I have no drastic improvement as yet but I think I am feeling a little bit better, starting to wee more (my worst symptom, retaining fluid). You need to have other things tested as well when you have under active thyroid, vit D, B12 and folate are usually low. I have vit D deficiency which also causes aches and pains, so worth having these checked.
I have read that most improvement will be seen 2 weeks after the doctors get your dose right.
Mitchell66 - how have you overcome your Vit D deficiency? I have just been told I am deficient too and it's best sorted through diet but finding it very difficult as a veggie who doesn't eat fish! Any tips?
Hi Ali, have not long found out I am deficient. Doc wasn't bothered so went to Holland and Barret. I'm taking the 25ug one tablet per day although I'm thinking of doubling up because apparently if you are deficient you should have a 'loading' dose. Won't know till I'm tested again in about 2 months if it is working (that's if my doc finds it necessary to have a test).
If you supplement with Vitamin D you must buy Vitamin D3 and not D2.
Really? GP didn't mention this - what a surprise!! I have osteoporosis so I was thinking of getting a calcium/Vit D supplement but feel I need more research first. Thanks
This is a link. Magnesium and Vit D go hand-in-hand. Magnesium can be from your diet and about 3 brazil nuts is a daily quota.

Thanks for the links. Really helpful x
I was diagnosed about 4 years ago and I remember starting to feel so much better after about a month on levothyroxine. Sadly it was short lived as once my body became accustomed to it all the symptoms returned. I've had this yo yo effect ever since and so wish I had found this site earlier as I would have kept going back instead of taking what my GP told me which was it can't all be down to your thyroid! There is light at the end of the tunnel but finding correct dose can take time.
I hope you feel better soon.
Ali
On the vitamin D question, I had no success at all with over the counter supplements. My GP put me on 40,000 units a week and this did raise my pitifully low levels a bit, what really did the job was borrowing a narrowband UVB lamp for 3 months, level shot up.
Thank you all for posting back, very frightening when you read up on it and not knowing how ure going to be daily,I've had a better day not feeling so low .... Is it the tablets or the thyriods that make u put on weight?
