Could a "stealth" virus be contributing to your thyroid dysfunction?

This is a very new area of research in which multi system breakdown (including the endocrine system) caused by chronic "stealth" viruses is being studied.

This article is apparently just the tip of the iceberg.

In 1980, I was half way through my 'round the world' back-packing trip, and was working in Australia to fund the second part. I went down with a very nasty throat infection, and the doctor I saw took a swab from the back of my mouth. The results confirmed that I had a particularly nasty virus.

I remember the doctor telling me that it was one of the worst, not that it would kill me, but that my body would probably never be able to get rid of it completely. I do suspect that is why I have been ill for the last 30 years but unfortunately, telling my doctors this tale illicits nothing more than a slightly raised eyebrow.

Let me recommend a book called "On hope and healing" by Dr. Neil Nathan to you.

At the recommendation of another user of this site we bought the book and went out to California to see him as did the other user before us. He identified a serious chronic virus (probably of 30 years duration), and three mould toxins (one of them life-threatening) and a nematode sinus worm in my daughter. We are awaiting the results of 3 other tests, but she has already begun treatment for the conditions so far identified, any one of which or all of which could have caused her thyroid function to fail. There's an awful lot still to be learned about thyroid problems.

Thanks Jane. I am totally peed off that as I presented myself to a GP after over two years of back-packing through countries like Pakistan, India, and Indonesia, there have never been extensive tests to see if I had picked up anything that may explain my illness.

Unfortunately, having been off work for over 20 years, and never received anything but basic income support, my finances prevent me travelling to most places in the UK, never mind the USA.

I agree there, Jane B, about there being a lot to learn. Thanks for the link.

We do have a low immune system and if I get a cold it always goes to my chest. After 3 weeks I am on my third type of antibiotic. I was fortunate that the locum had a vast experience of Thyroid and asked if I was 'medical because I asked about T3 and T4,

Very interesting article Jane, but far from antibiotics possibly helping, in my case I think they are what has caused my problems.

Hi j_bee,

The point is that viruses should be treated with antivirals, not antibiotics, which when inappropriately used can worsen an untreated viral problem. My daughter is now being treated with antivirals and transfer factors. I found that once I started googling the subject there is loads of information out there about it, mostly from the US, but some from Germany too. Jane x x

Sorry Jane, must have mis-read, will go back sometime and try and take it all in. A lot of good information from this site lately though. Many thanks for this. Janet x.
