Had never given it any thought before now. Found this paper (make of it what you will!):

jstage.jst.go.jp/article/bb...

I would be wary because the changes are marginal - and might be going the wrong way about things.

I am not sure but this excerpt on Nutrition maybe helpful. cursor to October 24, 2002. Other topics at the top of the page may interest you but some links within may not work.

Dr. Lowe: You’re not the first person to quote the biochemist and ask whether we discourage hypothyroid patients from taking omega-3 fatty acids. Jackie Yellin and I have searched for the statement by the biochemist you and others refer to, but we haven’t found it. If you’re quoting him correctly, I don’t understand his grounds for the statement. We've found no evidence that omega-3 fatty acids impair the thyroid gland. We have, however, found some evidence suggesting just the opposite—that the fatty acids protect the gland.

Japanese researchers found that among hypothyroid patients, those with higher levels of fatty acids in their blood had less severe hypothyroid symptoms. The also found that patients with lower fatty acid levels had more severe hypothyroid symptoms.[1]

HI Shaws, not being funny, but why do you quote Dr Lowe on omega-3 fatty acids when Michelle is asking about Royal Jelly? Is there omega-3 fatty acid in Royal Jelly?

Hi greygoose

I know she asked about Royal Jelly and I have no idea what it contains but thought it would be useful to know about the Omega3 which is helpful for the thyroid gland.

Thank you for the info. I'm trying to find something that can help me to feel a little better as we all are! I have a couple of weeks off college so thought I would do some research into supplements.

Asking the 'endocrinologists' (and I use that term with ever such slight contempt) usually gets me nowhere except another prescription for anti depressants! Excuse my Cynicism but I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall most of the time ;)

Much appreciated, I have only been on this site for a few hours and have found it much more informative and friendly than elsewhere.

Good stuff

Having tried nearly every supplement going - I've recently started taking royal jelly capsules (Holland and Barrett - 100 mg) and definitely noticed a bit of an improvement in my energy levels. I take 2 capsules early morning and 2 capsules early evening - interestingly the 500 mg size made my head feel a bit weird.

I've been taking it after reading this paper: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/173...

dont believe any further research was done. It hasnt reduced my levels, but may have stopped them increasing. The problem with no one following up on this research is that I have no idea of the quantities to take, or even if swallowing it would have an impact anyway as this research was done on blood samples

This research was done on the blood of people with graves disease hyperthyroid, so does not suggest it would be useful for patients with hypothyroidism (although it might be, who knows?).
