How would I know I need T3, what are the symptons? - Thyroid UK
How would I know I need T3, what are the symptons?
The symptoms would more or less be the same as hypothyroidism, in that T4 (inactive hormone) should convert to T3 but some people are poor converters. T3 is the active hormone which goes directly into your cells.
You can have a low level of T3 but many labs wont do it if your TSH is within range.
You can get a private test for T3 from one of the labs in Thyroiduk.og
You would tell by comparing an FT4 test with an FT3 test. If, for example, the FT4 is right at the top of the range, and the FT3 right down the bottom, then you aren't converting the T4 into T3. If they are both at the bottom then you don't have enough T4 to convert and need an increase.
Hope this helps, Grey
What if FT4 is 'over' the top of the range but FT3 is middle of the range with hypo symptoms.
Does this mean either not converting properly or T3 is not getting into cells?
Personally, I would say not converting properly. If the FT4 is higher in its range than the FT3 is in its then you aren't converting. There is no test to see if it's getting into the cells, I'm afraid.
Hi As said the tests especially are vital. Often FT3 ,if low can be high or highish TSH, also often overweight is linked to low FT3. On treatment the T4 should be top two thirds of range and FT3 near the top, as a rough guide.
Best wishes,
