I'd like to see a doctor privately but not sure if it's beyond my reach.Was just wondering generally are we talking hundreds or thousands.I don't want to know how much people have paid separately more a ballpark figure to get an idea.
If it's thousands I won't even bother trying to save.

It obviously depends on the doctor and what is involved. You would have the fees for the appointment - ongoing, as you will need to be monitored - the fees for any lab work that needs to be done (unless you can get your NHS GP to have those done on the NHS) - then the cost of the prescription if they prescribe medication.
I don't think the upfront costs - initial visit all told for me was in the hundreds (including the extra blood test which the NHS wouldn't do: T3, antibodies) not thousands - are the prohibitive part, it is the ongoing care that something like hypothyroidism entails that makes everything add up.
It can be anything really, if blood tests included could be around £500-£600, consultation only is around £200 in average, then follow up appointments and often private prescriptions..
I would advice you to think carefully. I spent lots of money on private doctors and I didn't get any help.

I think dr P is very reasonable. I paid £180 for the initial consultation and then you have him on side for the next six months. I think that's very fair. You can call the office for advice all along the way. Nothing worse than paying every time you want to ask something!

you'll need more than 1,000 pounds for the appointment and all the blood tests - with a private endocrinologist.

My initial appointment was just over £1000, including consultation, blood tests and ultrasound of my thyroid. Since then I've had occasional consultations at £150 per visit. Sometimes I have to have FT3 and FT4 blood tests done too as my GP can only do TSH. But I do not have private prescriptions - my Endo writes to my GP and tells him what to prescribe. So it's not as bad as it sounds. Hope this helps.
Hi Vanessa, I see a lovely , good endo. She charges about £150 first consultation and then £90. They are all long, as long as you need sometimes 1 and half hours! Means she runs late! I never have anything done a private hospitals, especially bloods for her, very expensive). A private or NHS endo writes to the doctor and tells them what they must do. Even difficult GP`s ,in my experience follow what told. Of course, at first visit they also want tests subsequently for the other things which effect the thyroid ( they tell the GP ). Make sure endo your choice, ( research first ) and not the GP`s.

Hi i see dr s his prices have changed a little but i paid around £200 for first appointment and then £110 for any other appointment. I get my gp to do bloods but i pay privatly for the ones he wont do like ft3. Dr s can give you a prescription but the charges in chemist for private prescriptions are crazy so i source my own under the eye of dr s. I see him around 3 times a year. Seeing him was the best thing i ever did. X
