Relax - you don't need to worry about the old-hat ineffective (or worse) medicines from Merck, they've got some new ones lined up:

reuters.com/article/2013/02...

There was a tradition of naming military operations with innocuous, pretty meaningless names. This continued in police and other areas. But looks like Merck (and, to be fair, others) are choosing names that seem to pre-judge the outcome and might even influence it.

ENHANCE and IMPROVE-IT

It somehow seems difficult to even write that IMPROVE-IT might WORSEN-IT!

After reading "The great Cholesterol Con" by Dr Malcolm Kendrick (2007) I vowed never to touch statins. With a cholesterol level of about 6 for most of my life, although it does go down sometimes, I have often been offered and have always refused statins.

Strangely enough I had a load of blood tests done recently and was fully expecting to be hauled in yet again re my cholesterol only to be told it was "normal" crickey that's the only time I have appreciated that word! All of them were "normal" so now have to go back to doctor to see how "normal" they really are and get a print out.

A higher cholesterol is a symptom of hypo (GP's appear not to know) and it usually comes down when properly medicated.

Yes that's why I am surprised it was "normal" seems perhaps my medication is starting to work properly. Will only know when I find out what my " normal" TSH level is. Last time it was over 3 and although that was considered normal by my doctor I wasn't happy with it and so upped my thyroxine. Now I just want to see what it's down to. What fun and games:)

When you think of it, it is serious but laughable that we have to do all this in order to get better. Medical people just don't know how ill we feel and they treat clinical symptoms as nothing to do with the thyroid gland.

And what is normal? We are not all the same. My cholesterol has always been round 6 - 6.4. Goes up and down a little. Good c =2.6. So no problem. What is a normal TSH? there is NO NORMAL. Just guide lines. Trying to get the nations c to below .1 .......... not healthy. We need cholesterol but in balance.

Yes, you are right but maybe it is the pharmaceutical companies want bigger profits.
