Thyroid yo-yo Has anyone with Graves' disease and has been brought to a low level been prescribed thyroxin to get them to normal range?

Do you mean block and replace, where the action of the thyroid is blocked and thyrod meds given to compensate? It's often used with hyper.

Hi, originally given thyroxin for underactive thyroid, then went high, given carbimazole, brought to underactive state, they thought thyroid would rise naturally but it hasn''t so now they want to put me on thyroxin again. They have never mentioned block and replace at all. I have been told if I went high again the only alternative was thyroid removal, and I don't like the sound of that. I feel lousy which is why thyroxin seems my only choice, even homeopathy hasn't helped. I just wondered if anyone else who was hyper before and brought so low by carbimazole went down this road with any success?

Hi, I'm still going through it now so can't say I've had 'success' yet. I have Graves, started out hyper, carbimazole made me hypo, came off carbimazole but it didn't correct itself, so I went onto levo. The levo made me hyper again, I'm now off medication again as of today to see if it corrects itself, but I will have to start again on the carbimazole in a couple of weeks if it doesn't. They had basically given me too much carbimazole which made me go hypo, so it will be a much lower dose this time. Maybe you were given too much thyroxine last time and need a lower dose too?

For me, half the battle is making sure my blood tests are regular, as I can swing from hypo to hyper in the space of 1-2 weeks. I now get my blood tests when I think I need them, not when endo thinks I need them, so I got tested early when I felt myself going hyper again, and it meant I caught it early and stopped the levo. Keep an eye on your dosages, I react very quickly to a change in medication and need the smallest possible dose. x

You are absolutely sure it's Graves' disease? It couldnT be hashimotos could it? What were the results of the antibody tests?
