Dry mouth but not thirsty - what's going on?!

Does anyone know what's going on here? I have a really dry mouth but drinking water just doesn't seem to help. Even 1.5 - 2 litres a day. Seems like water is giving me a headache and pain in my spine too :-(

I think it is a hypo symptom - as is sjogrens, dry skin, etc. I take a bottle of water with me now as it is awkward if you are somewhere where you cannot get a drink. Sometimes it comes on suddenly.

It could also be adrenal insufficiency or a combination of all the above. I used to get this a lot but not so much now. I did treat my adrenals with self-help methods and I don't get this so much now.

Yes, I'm hypo and my mouth is really dry most of the time. I also get uncontrollable coughing fits from a dry tickle in my throat that is quite distressing. Does anyone else experience this?

Hi It could also be Sjogren`s or diabetes. It is important to have the 2 blood tests for diabetes, it might be that you do not fit the normal pattern. I was like this, GP disagreed, refused test ( she is difficult). In the end I had to diagnose myself( again) it was extremely severe by then, hospital and insulin etc. If your GP will not test, they should Then, a good pharmacist will do a rough , free test, BM ( finger prick) ,walk in test but be sure you only have water for at least 2 hours before. Normal BM is 4 to 6 but it can be higher ,depending what you have eaten. Mine was 48!!

It is a classic sign of diabetes, you may not have any other symptoms yet.

Best wishes,

Jackie

I notice that if I eat over a certain amount of sweet things I experience an insatiable thirst/dry mouth.

Sounds like you need your blood sugars testing. Are you an autoimmune thyroid sufferer? Type 1 (autoimmune) diabetes is a related autoimmune condition in the thyrogastric cluster worth checking. Ref: Noel Rose and Ian MacKay 'The Autoiimmune Diseases' Johns Hopkins, US.
