Hi First of all are you taking magnesium? This would cause Potassium to be high, unless on it under medical supervision. Magnesium has a very tiny range. potassium, magnesium , sodium and calcium are the main electrolytes. They must always be in range. That is essential for Kidneys and heart. potassium ideally should be 4, not at the the top of range which various slightly at different labs. However ,it must not be near the top or bottom of range for safety. I have to take a lot of potassium which is very dangerous but

otherwise potassium too low and I have cadiac arrests ( not that uncommon, main cause of sudden death). If my potassium is too high in range then when that happened I had multiorgan failure and a coma, ITU etc at deaths door, potassium alters every day. When in hospitals I have mine done everyday, which i need, as outpatients I can only have it weekly, this is not enough if taking Potassium or magnesium. I take huge doses on prescription,to stop further arrests ( I had 4 of the most deadly type, ie due to low potassium ) the only other way is extremely dangerous. Vit D can cause calcium to go to high if not monitored. Sodium is generally in our own arms but must be in range. Of course, all these are very connected which is why I mention them. How high was your potassium?I hope this gives you the full picture and actually is a help.I cannot stress how important this is. I was also seeing cardiologists before my arrests, who were ignorant of the Potassium connection, mine was low then, GP`s generally do not know this either. I am doing my best to educate doctors but there are so many!!! However, high is really even more dangerous.

Hi fion,

That is too high, top of range is normally 5.1. or 5.3 depending on Lab. please see the doctor very soon, it really is too high. What were the rest of your U`s and E`s? There is also a test for potassium in the cells, not normally done, cost, but a much better test. Please do not leave it and insist on seeing some one. If you see an endo it is also their field, in fact nephrologists or cardiologists too. If you see a cardio ask to see a rhythm specialist, only at big hospitals as specialised cardio. Send me a PM to let me know how you get on.

PS Make sure they check your magnesium and calcium too, both separate tests, it is the corrected calcium that matters.

Hi Me again, Just worrying about you. Are you on diuretics? if so essential to have a lot to drink or that can cause high potassium. Also if on Spironolactone, that actually replaces potassium so not suitable if you have high Potassium

Hi,If it is lack of fluid it should show on the other U`s and E`s which are done with Potassium. Be sure to ask for a print out with ranges. It would not be Prozac.let me know.
