what would cause such a reduction in B12?

Having done a Thriva at home test recently I can see that my Vit B12 results are massively under range and have dropped by 75% in less than a year. I haven’t changed anything in my diet. Can anyone think what would cause this so dramatically?

what are your most recent TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 results

And actual vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 results

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Many (most?) on replacement thyroid hormones find they need to supplement daily vitamin D, separate magnesium, separate vitamin B complex and often initially a separate daily B12 as well

Some people also need to work on improving low ferritin levels too

The HORMONE "vit D" issue, is more complicated than MOST of our medical profession recognises, says the KNOWN, established biochemistry of many decades.

We hv little, or NO chance of making sense of what happening in any one case with ONLY the prohormone, calcidiol test result. Sadly, the active hormone, calcitriol - which can be elevated ( - too much) in autoimmune & inflammation causing conditions - is hardly ever considered or, measured, . . . by our 'lost-on-this-issue' clinicians ! ! ! 😳❓😨❗😥❗

More info abt the known biochem on numerous sites, including at: chronicillnessrecovery.org - hope that's a useful pointer ... for ALL with concerns of HORMONE 'vit D deficiency' !

Several possibilities occur to me:

Reduced availability in your diet - even if it hasn't changed much.

Reduced absorption from your diet.

Could be due to changes in Intrinsic Factor production, or acidity (required to digest B12-containg foods well), etc.

Even those who can absorb B12 find reduced absorption as we age.

Your body is using more B12.

Your B12 recirculation is not working as well as it used to.

I assume that both last year's and this recent test were Active B12?

Do you take any B12 supplements?

Any digestive upset at all ….are you on any over the counter meds or prescribed?

Some are known to deplete … eg Metformin and PPIs etc.

With B vitamins how food is cooked can deplete them, as can alcohol consumption…even stress!

Is the test the same type and ranges to compare ?

As we age absorption can become an issue also .

Hello, . . . practiced Juggler ! 🙂

For yr info: there is a 'B12 deficiency' ("B12d") assessment tool/calculator, for FREE use at: b12d.org - based on signs & symptoms of presentation! A VERY useful site, set up as a CHARITY! 🙏 🙂 🙏 Worth exploring, . . . when yr energy levels permit !

Am wondering if 'disc degenerative disease' can ( - at least in some cases !) be caused by B12d ( - sounds V similar to ?sub-acute spinal cord degeneration ?!).

I echo the VIEW that B12 💉s (injections) are often not considered SOON enuf in TOO many cases by our Drs, . . . allowing avoidable deterioration to occur! Not good !

Many sufferers hv found some - or MUCH - relief by arranging their own B12 💉s, . . . - & subsequently learning how to self inject in due course ( - at a cost ~£1 a shot ... currently!): more info on all aspects of B12 biochem, & practice on HU's PA ( - pernicious anaemia) forum !

Good luck ! I'm sure B12 💉s can reduce poor sleep, . . . & sleep apnoea, in some cases.

All the above as general info ONLY - & none should be taken as 'medical advice' !

PS: I note others hv replied to yr precise question.

Whatever the reason(s) for yr B12 levels falling significantly, I believe it's V helpful to give serious thoughts to raising these again. A sub-group of those with 'B12d' ONLY respond to injections, rather than drops, sprays, capsules, ot tablets.

One neurologist is of the view that those with neurological issues ( - like brain fog, central sleep aponea etc) are more likely to only benefit from injections.
