This is generally a low-risk issue, and does NOT apply to UK-produced products, but there is risk directly to those with thyroid deficiency and anemia. The first being the majority of members and the second being very common among members. We also have a number of members who have kidney issues.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners recalls a small range of soft drinks as a precaution because of elevated levels of Chlorate

Coco-Cola Europacific Partners is taking the precautionary step of recalling a small number of their soft drinks range because they may contain elevated levels of Chlorate. This poses a low food safety risk especially when only consumed occasionally, however consumers who are sensitive to chlorate and have pre-existing mild to moderate iodine deficiency may be more adversely affected.

Standard dimension cans, all glass and plastic bottles sold in the UK are not impacted. Only the products listed below are affected. Images of products affected are attached below. [Follow link to see details.]

In addition to the batch codes and the best before, it is important for consumers to also check the production codes that can be found on the bottom of the can. Only production codes from 328 GE to 338 GE are included in the product recall.

Risk statement

This product may contain elevated levels of chlorate. This poses a low food safety concern, especially when consumed only occasionally. However adverse health effects cannot be ruled out for consumers sensitive to Chlorate, in particular young children and consumers with pre-existing medical conditions such as thyroid deficiency, blood conditions, especially anaemia, or those with kidney diseases.

Long term consumption of chlorate can lead to the inhibition of iodine uptake, this could potentially cause adverse health effects such as goitre. A single high intake of chlorate, (as an acute exposure), could limit the body’s ability to absorb oxygen from the blood, and could in severe cases lead to kidney failure.

Thanks for that helvella, I heard it on the radio yesterday but didn’t realise it didn’t apply to CC produced in the U.K.

I never drink Coca-Cola these days - it is one more thing that is bad for your bones and I’ve got osteoporosis, besides if you can use it to clean a toilet - just imagine what it can do to your insides.
