Tentative progress re sub clinical hyperthyroidism

Ownedbyamuddyspaniel profile image

As per my previous posts I've been struggling with what I was pretty sure are symptoms of an overactive thyroid since 2016.

The referral to NHS endo was rejected as my numbers are in range albeit with a TSH of 0.27/0.36 etc so right on the bottom of the range, despite me being a walking list of hyper symptoms including a goitre.

I've been waiting for a private consultation which looked like it was going to be March but I was lucky to get a cancellation.

I saw the consultant today and had a really good experience. I didn't know what to expect.

He thinks it's very likely to be subclinical hyperthyroidism and whilst many people aren't symptomatic, some are which is where he thinks I am.

He's suggesting 5mg of carbimazole on alternate days for 6 weeks to see if it helps.

Fingers crossed it helps and will at least identify if this is the issue.

Good to hear you got a consultation, let us know how it goes! Did they suggest an ultrasound or testing antibodies?

Thanks Regenallotment, thyroid antibodies tested privately aren't showing as positive. Goitre has been checked and is multinodular and benign.

Hi, Did you have a biopsy on your goitre? I have got more nodules in the last year, had a scan, but the NHS have discharged me & refused to do a biopsy. I’m waiting to see a private endocrinologist when I get a copy of my scan.

Sorry you're having this issue. My goitre has been identified as not needing a biopsy I think it may have been BIRADS 2 but I'd have to check, it's multinodular and potentially is producing hormone which is potentially causing overactivity. I was also discharged by NHS ENT. NHS endo won't accept my GP 's referral as my TSH is in range so I've had to go to private endo.

He says we don't all fit templates and whilst many people with sub clinical hyperthyroid don't have symptoms some do 🥳🥳🥳

I had a multinodular goiter too. My doctor ordered the radioactive iodine test and it showed I had toxic nodules that were causing the subclinical hyperthyroidism. You may want to ask about this test. Good luck.

I wonder if he may have suggested this if I wasn't self funding privately. He seems to be of the view that my symptoms are consistent with hyperactive, albeit sub clinical based on the TSH and alongside the goitre and the rest of the test results it's worth trying the med to see if it helps or not.

I have my fingers firmly crossed! 🤞
