Grave's Disease (Hyperthyroidism)

Good morning all ,

I just wanted to check if Propylthiouracil's subsequent prescription by the GP is free?

Or do I have to buy a prepayment prescription?

Also, I was under the impression that Hyperthyroidism causes weight loss. In my case, it seems I'm eating more and gaining weight. What can I do avoid weight gain?

Thanks

Assume are you England?

Anti thyroid alone is not exempt. If on block & replace you would be prescribed levothyoxine in addition, then med ex applies.

Prepayment would likely save cost.

Yes, in England. OK, I will do 3 months prepayment or am I likely to be on the medication for more than 3 months?

Most Graves patients take anti thyroid for minimum 18 months & there is much research to say longer treatment improves remission chances too.

So you might want to consider annual.

Drs may reduce / stop treatment around a year - 18 months & move to definitive treatment. If you “relapse” you can opt to stay on treatment if thats best for you.

Most loose weight when hyper, regain weight when thyroid levels are optimal for the individual but can gain weight if hypothyroid. Drs also say some become accustomed to having larger appetite & don’t readjust when thyroid levels are back in range.

We are all individual, I gained weight when hyper & lost weight when levels in range.
