Dear all members I am Sha Malaysian but currently in Australia. I diagnosed by grave disease just few days ago. Last month I went for a check up and my doctor so handsome and friendly was explaining in detail what is this hyperthyroidism. Was very clear but not he only , all the doctors outside there couldn't 100% comfirm what gonna happen to us by taking this carbimazole. I was vegetarian for my personal reason during started to intake this medicine. Life was so good, feel healthy , a good night sleep, reasonable food intake. Everything fine and I thought phewww !! I'm recovering..... last week I bought some prawns and cook it with spices. First day it was fine and the next day when I wallap the leftover started a disaster. My body started to itchy all over , went to gp he ask me to consume prednisolone eventhough I told gp that I'm under thyroid medication. It's worse when I took both together whole over my body swallen, redish rashes and pain all over my body. Keep swallen and feel burn underneath my skin. I followed some of the Internet tips like use cold water to rub gently with cotton cloth and so on. Did brought down the problem but body temperature went high. I called my thyroid doctor and he unable to figure out what happened to me. All he told me that ok we change medicine as it didn't went well. I did a blood check up and my t4 , t3 all controlled ...from 50 came down to 20, 25 came down to 7. My doctor said this is great but the side effect is not good for you. He suggested ptu. I went to pharmacy to purchase ptu 😣Oh shit !!! 270 Aud for 100mg and if I'm a PR here than I can get discount to 140aud. What a terrible shit system. Than I read back all about carbimazole side effects over internet. So good tips. Now I'm practising according to it. 10mg every day by next week will do another blood check up. And might reduce the level eventhogh the side effects are there. Drinking coconut water and some of non side effect home remedies. Hope to see my doctor with stablised thyroid result by next week. Wish me good luck.

Hyperthyroidism ( grave disease)
Sorry I can't help you as hypothyroid but just wanted to say welcome to the forum! I'm sure someone will come along and comment soon
I do wish you good luck as we haven't a clue what is happening when we suddenly develop a thyroid disease. It sounded as if you had an allergic reaction, maybe to the seafood.
Those on the forum who have hyperthyroidism will respond when they read your post.
Hi Sha,
I am vegetarian and took Carbimazole for years with no side effects. I don't eat fish or seafood though.
I suggest you go back to it as it suited you, and don't eat prawns. I would advise you not to go into the spiral of different medications.
Go back to where you were.
Seafood, shellfish and coconut all contain high levels of iodine... people with graves should limit the amount of iodine in their diet as it makes us more hyper therefore requiring more medication
hi Karen, would it mean that people who are with overactive thyroid problems taking carbimazole should not take foods rich in iodine. Or is it just Graves' disease sufferers. Many thanks for info. Val.
It means people with both hyper and hyper with graves should reduce dietary iodine to get levels under control. Dairy products are also high in iodine as are some vegetables (dark green varieties) and strawberries. I love cheese so I have some cheese in my diet but avoid seafood and strawberries. You can google iodine rich foods and then amend your diet accordingly
Thanks for the info. I am overactive on CMZ 40 mg. My Endo advises me to supplement with selenium and my doctor with Kelp. What should I do. Thanks Val
Selenium is good but no more than 200mg per day. Kelp has a lot of iodine which I personally would not take. What are your blood levels like? 40mg is a high dose of carbimazole which is probably why you itching. I wouldn't take PTU as it has more side effects and can damage your liver. As your levels come down and you move to a lower maintenance dose the itching should subside. I've been taking carbimazole for over 2 years and not had any side effects
