Hello Community! Have noticed lots of you guys are taking your Levo at bedtime not early morning as advised by the prescription. I have been struggling with staying asleep since increasing to 75mcg . Could changing the time i take it help ?

You could try it and see

Or try splitting the dose initially when increasing dose up

Taking half dose waking and half dose at bedtime

Many people take Levothyroxine soon after waking, but it may be more convenient and perhaps more effective taken at bedtime

No other medication or supplements at same as Levothyroxine, leave at least 2 hour gap.

Some like iron, calcium, magnesium, HRT, omeprazole or vitamin D should be four hours away

(Time gap doesn't apply to Vitamin D mouth spray)

If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test

If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal

Similarly if splitting your levothyroxine, take whole daily dose 24 hours before test

Thank you , I think splitting sounds like a good idea .

I haven't updated it in quite a long time, but I did a blog page on this:

helvella - Bed-time dosing of levothyroxine

Discussion about taking levothyroxine at bed-time. Several linked references to relevant papers.

Hi Kellybun,

Some take their levo during the night. I do this as I wake a few times then. It's also useful as it doesn't interfere with timings of any supplements you may be taking.

I was a bad sleeper until I started taking my Levo at bedtime. I noticed a difference almost immediately and now I sleep very well. I do have the odd occasion when I either can’t get comfortable or my brain won’t switch off, but those are rare.

Exactly my experience - except I started off and always have taken it at bedtime.
