Newly diagnosed hyperthyroidism

Hi 👋

I’m newly diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, multiple nodules. I’ve been prescribed 1, 2.1/2 mg Carbimazole 1 a day, ( I’m sensitive to medication so thyroid nurse said see how I go on low dose) I’ve been taking them for one week now.

I’m asking if anyone has had any side effects from this medication?

about an hour after taking, i experience;

Slight headache -Nausea -tummy ache-light headed-and a feeling of being generally unwell, had to go and lie down one day this week, any ideas on how long side effect last?

Thanks for reading.

Sounds like a side effect. This often eases when you’ve taken medicine for a week or two.

Have you read through the patient information Leaflet carefully? There are some side affects to be vigilant for & they offer suggestion to help resolve some common ones & when to speak to doctor.

Hi purplenails,

Yes, I’ve read through the leaflet. I didn’t think such a low dose could have such horrible effects, I’m also taking 5mg of a statin, Rosuvastatin, every day, I take them at the same time each morning, should I space them out maybe?

Thanks.

Hi 👋

Do you know of any thyroid support groups in Liverpool please?

I did see a post about one in Waterloo, but that’s a bit far for me, as I’m agoraphobic and can’t travel too far,

Thanks Joy

Hi 👋

I spoke to thyroid nurse at the hospital on how I’ve been feeling, she suggested I take the 2.1/2mg twice a week, if I can manage it then 3 times a week, and she will call me next Friday.

I’ve never seen an endocrinologist Dr. only specialist nurse, is that usuall? No complaints I may add, she’s very good, just thought I’d ask.

Thanks for reading. Joy.

Sorry I don’t know about groups in Liverpool. Are you on Facebook? You might be able to find something that way.

I dealt with specialist nurse, much better than the doctors I saw.

Thank you I’ll try Facebook

That’s good to know, I wondered why I’d not seen a Dr.

I have taken 5mg of Carbimazole daily for the last 3 years and have never experienced any side effects. I was advised to take it on its own as soon as I wake up. I then wait 2 hours before taking anything else including vitamins to maximise absorption. Are you taking the statin at the same time? Maybe an interaction?

Hi 👋

Yes, I’m taking statin same time as ATM, I’ll try leaving it until lunch time, see how I go.

I was expecting side effects, I have them with every medication I get prescribed, these are my forth statin, this one is the only one I managed, eventually to tolerate.

Hi 👋

Thanks for your reply.

I spoke to thyroid nurse at the hospital this morning on how I’ve been feeling, she suggested I take the 2.1/2mg twice a week, if I can manage it then 3 times a week, and she will call me next Friday.

I also mentioned the statin and the multivitamin and mineral tablet I take daily, she said both are fine together no interactions.
