Hello. I am recently returned to UK after living abroad. Happily the NHS has been quite supportive in terms of ongoing treatment of Hashimotos and Adrenal Insufficiency. I have been referred to an NHS consultant who has supported supply of the medications I have been on for years (T3/T4 and Hydrocortisone). However my symptoms/conditions seem quite complex and I am considering consulting a private endocrinologist. I am not sure how this works here! If I consult a private doctor, does this mean I can no longer see the NHS one? Must I inform the NHS one? etc? If the private doctors suggests a different medication protocal, can this be supplied through NHS, or paid for privately. Please excuse my ignorance, but and shared experiences would be helpful! Thanks.

Its not really advisable to be seeing 2 different consultants for the same condition, mainly because they may have differing treatment styles and opinions.
What is it that you're not happy with or lacking from your NHS consultant?
You will still be able to get your Levo on the NHS but you would need to check with your GP if they would still be happy to continue prescribing T3. It may well be fine as treatment was initiated by an NHS Endo but best to check. If they wont continue the prescription buying T3 isnt too expensive at all.
Your private consultant is likely to write to your GP after the consultation so it might be best to be honest with your GP.
Are you supplementing vitamin levels to optimal?
What supplements do you take?
Hi
The private consultant is almost certainly an NHS consultant earning spare cash on Saturday morning or retired from the NHS.
They might accept you referring yourself but you say that you are 'complex'. The private consultant will need as much information as possible about you including a comprehensive summary from your GP.
I agree with Jaydee. Being under 2 consultants at once isn't to be advised.
Not sure about ongoing care the private consultant is almost certainly unable to give you an NHS prescription. They should communicate with your GP.
