I'm having fasting blood tests. When should I stop my Thyroid S?

Hi

I'm having a bells-and-whistles set of fasting blood tests including a thyroid set from my very good GP.

How long before the blood draw should I stop my Natural Dessicated?

Thanks

Hello Archipoeta :

We generally suggest a fasting blood test and for NDT 10-12 hours after last dose.

Is this the first blood test you will have run since switching to NDT ?

Did you run bench mark readings for T3 and T4 prior to switching and so have something to compare new results to ?

Consistency in timing of blood tests is also important - so if this just another routine blood test to compare to previous bloods as already on NDT - just do what you did last time.

Thanks. Yes, just a routine blood test after a decade of NDT.

split your NDT day before

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

NDT ….day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day, with last dose approximately 8-12 hours before test

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 5-7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12

Far too difficult. All I wanted to know was when to stop the NDT.

Do you normally split your NDT?

Do you take any biotin in vitamin B complex ….if you do, you need to stop it 5-7 days before test

Personally I take as normal the day before. On the day of test, (fasting, no tea or coffee) I do my test as early as possible, then take my Thyroid-S immediately after, and settle down to some breakfast and coffee. Simples 😁
