Hypothyroidism and type D personality.

I've just come across this paper about hypothyroidism and type D personality. I was quite upset by it and haven't read it all yet as it is quite complicated, but I'd be interested to hear what others have to say.

I’m going to try and be brief, and hoping someone will correct me…..

But is this study saying …. That depressed/anxiety/low mood causes (ie it “PRECEDES”) dissatisfaction with being hypo/being suboptimally treated for hypo.

Significance of Main Findings

Hypothyroidism is known to be associated with psychological morbidity both before and after the diagnosis of hypothyroidism (44). Our study indicates that type D personality may cluster with hypothyroidism. Given that the majority of patients develop hypothyroidism in middle life, it may be assumed that type D personality precedes the onset of hypothyroidism in most cases. This reasoning suggests that the type D personality traits are not the result of hypothyroidism or its treatment and the poor experiences often described by people with hypothyroidism but that the pre-existence of type D personality traits may color the perception of the patient experience.

I was pissed off reading it, coming across gems like:

- Type D personality was associated with the expression of the view that the thyroid medication taken did not control the symptoms of hypothyroidism well (P = 6.32E-24), with dissatisfaction with care and treatment of hypothyroidism (P = 1.45E-18) and with a negative impact on everyday living (P = 5.00E-29) (Table 3, Fig. 2).

- Type D personality is common among patients with chronic diseases (36);

I was thinking all the way through this … what a word salad saying a whole bunch of absolute crap. A whole lot of time they took to study whatever the Type D personality type is and state the absolute fricking obvious that people with an unmanaged chronic disease have symptoms that interfere with a happy, carefree life and having a social life… that … surprise surprise these people are more likely to be depressed, low and have anxiety.

Paper states no financial conflicts among the researchers - I call bull**** on that and await the next release that shows a drug company that treats type D personality indicated for people with hypothyroidism.

What a gold mine…

The stats for me were the best part of the paper. Validating that about 15% of hypo folks still have symptoms despite blood chemistry looking “normal.” So they admit it!

Did I mis-read this garbage paper? I will totally delete this if I missed the point and missed the logic.

No, I don't think you missed the point, that is what they're saying. Blaming the patient - again! Couldn't possibly be their ignorance about treating hypo and their obsession with the TSH, could it!

I find it very annoying to have my personality being characterised by my medical problems, as if my ailments are my fault.

Crikey, my personality is the cause of my illness!! What a load of crap... anyway I'm quite an optimistic person on the whole...strange though it might sound to the writers of the paper, it's unmanaged thyroid hormone levels and low vitamin b12 that make me down and pessimistic! Bloody cheek.

If you look through the references to the article (always an essential occupation in my mind) you’ll find that in more instances than should be healthy, most of the authors of this paper are actually referencing articles they wrote themselves! In other words, this “research” was already a foregone conclusion by people rehashing their own previous research… 🤔

I will cut to the chase. It’s SH1t. Zephyrbear also makes a good observation. Basically they are dredging up other pieces of their own previous dreadful research to make it look new. It reminds me of particularly tawdry sales pitches. Disgusting.

I used to be a Biomedical Scientist (retired now) and, many times have I seen a research group do a small amount of work and then re-hash it over and over again. Peer review is supposed to stop this sort of thing, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

As regards this paper - How dare they suggest that something as serious as hypothyroidism is caused by a certain personality. I know that I was severely depressed in the years leading up to my Hashi's diagnosis, but with treatment. things improved a lot. Unfortunately, 14 years down the line I am still having some symptoms, and it's only down to the ignorance and stubbornness of the medics that we still have to suffer. I have to contend with a couple of other medical problems, and the treatment of them is just as haphazard as my hypo treatment.

I get you about other medical problems. I am going through just that with my cardio. I knew I was taking a risk seeing a cardio but I was between a rock and a hard place. I knew I could not get to see another endocrinologist without cardio back up. Just trying to work out how I can best combine both ‘specialisms’ to benefit my health. As it is at the moment (and past) both are intent on destroying it!

I think most of us would say that we are driven to Type D tendencies by having to deal with the medical profession who are woeful at dealing with chronic conditions! The anxiety of being told you are well when you are far from it is further exacerbated by them

I'd say their treatment or lack of it and little understanding is the main cause of Type D behaviour 😠

Who doesn't go to the Dr feeling a little anxious and this grows with every revisit... this often becomes worse when you realize you are dealing with an incompetent, gas lighting, self important twit!

Totally agree with you.

Myxoedema madness is a real thing, and we all suffer from it to varying degrees, largely down to how well we are being treated.
