Odd results?

I’ve just had my bloods done again and the results seem odd.

My TSH is 4.07 and my T4 is 16.1

My GP hasn’t questioned it. T4 hasn’t been checked since May 2021 and in Jan 2022 my TSH was 2.32

The above photo shows a spreadsheet of my results since 2014. The top row is the recommended range.

# TSH #T4

Why do they seem odd to you? They're not complete because there's no FT3. It's possible that is low, causing the high TSH.

Can you give the range for the FT4, please? Ranges vary from lab to lab so we always need the range that came with your result. :)

Range 9-19 (top row of spreadsheet)

Oh, thank you! Sorry. I never look at spread sheets - I hate them!

So, 71.00% through the range. I expect your FT3 is low, as I said, and that is why the TSH is high-ish.

ESSENTIAL to test full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Significant minority of Hashimoto’s patients only have high TG antibodies (thyroglobulin)

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Have you had thyroid antibodies tested

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins
