Can anyone explain how TSH can go from undectable to 7.14 in two weeks?

I finally got an endocrinologist to see me, and she was adamant that I quit taking T3. The lab test at that visit had TSH <.02 (undetectable). I put my trust in her and stopped the T3 and continued 50 mcg levo/ day. After 2 weeks I went in for another test for TSH and T4. T4 was 0.4 and TSH was 7.14 (range 0.5 - 6.0) During this time I went from feeling good to knowing that a Zombie had more life than I did, and I continue to feel this way, even with an increase of T4 to 75 mcg.

If the TSH is doing so well, why do I feel so terrible?

Well, for a start, TSH doesn't make you feel anything. And secondly, it's not 'doing well'. It's far too high - which is to be expected if you stopped all your T3. 75 mcg is not going to cut it, especially if you're a poor converter, which I assume you must be to have started T3. Why did she insist you stop it? She obviously has no idea what she's doing and she's never going to make you well, she's just making you worse.

T3 has a half life of less than a day so is quickly out of your system. Your body is trying to get your t3 back up to its 'normal' level (whatever that normal is), hence the rise in tsh trying to stimulate more t4/t3 production. Obviously if your thyroid is knackered or non existent it won't have any effect!

Looking at previous posts

You were on mainly T3

How much T3 were you taking

If you were going to try less T3 and more Levo it should be done SLOWLY

Increase in Levo by 25mcg …..wait 4 days then reduce T3 by 5mcg

Wait 6 weeks and retest

Repeat

But you are were you are ……

Your extremely low Ft4 and high TSH shows your own thyroid is completely dead

You are currently only on 50mcg levothyroxine. This is only standard STARTER dose

How much do you weigh approximately

Guidelines on dose levothyroxine by weight when ONLY on just Levothyroxine….is 1.6mcg per kilo of your weight per day

Results show you are very hypo

Increase Levo by 25mcg

Retest in 6 weeks INCLUDING Ft3

Meanwhile test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Contact the secretary of your Endo and give her your results and ask for a phone back. You are ill, no question. Your thyroid is trying to help, but cannot. Tell them how ill you are feeling, and thinking of going to A+E. The endo should be then in a flat panic and contact you with a new prescription.

This drive to get us all of T3 is hurting a lot of people. Demand to be on the same dose as before when you felt well and then go from there.

It amounts to criminal negligence, and the higher your TSH gets, the more ill you will become. Your Endo is stupid, and causing you harm. Ask her to fix it.
