Just a query to any gluten free people. Are you always aware if you've been "glutened"?
I have been strictly GF for over ten years now and if I have ever been glutened I haven't really noticed.
I have been taking a supplement for months now. The ingredients on the website stated that it contained 100% of the product but I have just noticed on my new batch that they have added allergy advice, as they can't guarantee that it will be gluten free. So, as it's possible it may have traces, I'm not sure what to do?
My gut reaction (no pun intended) is to just assume it's OK but the saying "Eating a little bit of gluten is like being a little bit pregnant" keeps running through my mind!
Any advice anyone?

Have you been diagnosed coeliac? Personally, I have fairly recently gone gluten free to try to reduce general inflammation. I'm not coeliac. For me, I think my psoriasis flares up the day after gluten. My gut feels fine, apart from a bit more reflux. I think everyone reacts differently. I don't usually notice it immediately, but the next day its, "oh, there must've been some gluten"
That is one of the big issues for me . There may be no immediate impact of eating gluten so you get to enjoy the upside of the taste etc and it’s then hard to stop eating it next time. However I now realise that the next day my knees ache and I feel sluggish , I often have a migraine type headache the next day , if I eat gluten for a number of consecutive days I get a dizziness/ spinning sensation .
Recently I have here really good at staying gluten free and now, if I do eat any, I get a more immediate reaction . I think I have been desensitised.
I experience pretty much the same reactions myself. However, all the tests turn out negative and I can't get a Cealiac certification. But I still get the symptoms. At the hospital I met a woman who had my same problem and we kept in touch. We basically resigned to being "just gluten intollerant". I've been on a completely gluten free diet for about 2 years now and I feel better.
I’m coeliac had off scale antibodies and gastroscope with biopsies diagnosis too.
I’m asymptomatic type although due to poor nutrition status as unknowingly I had coeliac disease, Hashimoto’s and pernicious anemia all diagnosed together, it caused neurological problems mostly rectified but still have nutritional problems as not absorbing well from a very good diet so have to supplement.
Like a previous coeliac mentioned I don’t know if glutened, I’m aware it can take months to clear through…I have an annual coeliac test but basically only tells if adherence to gf diet but would suggest gluten getting in somewhere but only around at the time of testing, it took me years to become negative for antibodies, and I’m ultra strict.
However the more digestive reactive types I believe do know they’ve been glutened.
Obviously myself I wouldn’t be taking the supplement…if you’re not coeliac you may get away with the maybe label, but I think I’d look for alternatives myself.
It depends. If you are diagnosed with Celiac disease, a little or a lot is the same. If you went GF for whatever reason, then I wouldn't worry about it. Also, the reaction to ingesting gluten happens 48-72 hours later not immediately.
I’ve been GF free for around 10 years now like you. I have had a reaction though to gluten in food a couple of time & yes believe me, you know when it’s happened. I don’t believe you can avoid it completely, as it’s in so many things like shampoos, body wash & other toiletries.
There may be warnings on labels, as factories can be used for many things & it may have been put on a label as a warning just incase. I think though, if you’ve not noticed anything by now then you should be ok.
I’m a coeliac and know if I’ve eaten it around 1-2 hours after eating as I start to feel incredibly bloated, have a painful tummy and feel horribly sick which can last up to 4 days.
Yes I notice I have had diagnosis about 6 yrs ago, get bloat, runs can't stay off the toilet, back to square one. It took 5 yrs for diagnosis through my Professor Neurologist/immunologist my blood test didn't show it until after I'd had negative biopsies on both bowel and stomach. I see a Dietician she is also my Diabetes Dietician and she's good, but also joining Coeliac UK is very good and they do cheaper membership for people on benefits and you get an app. to scan items when shopping.
Yes - if I ingest gluten by accident - the usual culprit is a gravy or sauce when eating anywhere other than home, the following day I'm vaguely achy, fingers and foot cramp, and thinking is through cold treacle.. not registered as coeliac, just gluten intolerant, poor converter with Hashimotos. Have found sugars produce the same adverse reactions, apart from very dark chocolate.
nope not straight away, day 3 headaches and pain between my shoulder blades start, brain fog from day 4-5. Tim not always affected . I doubt Im coeliac but I am Hashi, definitely better without it. Takes a fortnight of strict avoidance to recover 🌱
