Lost medication

Looking for a bit of advice, I suffer from terrible brain fog from time to time and unfortunately accidentally threw away my remaining Levothyroxine instead of the empty packet I thought I was disposing of.

I had two weeks left of the levothyroxine before my medication review as I am on a trial. I have a blood test booked for Tuesday which is meant to be so my GP can review where I am at. I do not have any levothyroxine left to take tomorrow, by my blood test it will be 48 hours without it. Is this going to skew my tests?

Has anyone had any luck getting a replacement of lost medication from their GP? I would of had enough to take me to the 15th November, my GP review is on the 9th. I feel so much better on the levothyroxine, I got quite upset when I found I had accidentally thrown it out. 😞

poor you, that is frustrating. You could ask the pharmacy for an emergency supply , contact the surgery and explain or, failing that, you may be able to get a prescription from 111. Good luck!

Thank you, I’ll ring my surgery first thing and see what they say

Is it too late to go digging in your bin to try and find your pills? They should be ok in their little bubble packs. If it is I think you will just have to contact your surgery and confess

Unfortunately the bin was collected before I realised, so they’ve gone. I did desperately search every remaining bin in the house just in case!

Your GP, NHS 111, and other possible avenues would represcribe. It’s common enough.

You could phone the surgery tomorrow and they should issue you with a new prescription. That is if you can't fish it out of the bin.

It will slightly affect your Tuesday blood test but as you are on a low dose in the early stages, not to worry too much.

Remember our protocol for taking a blood test.

Recommended blood test protocol: Test at 9am (or as close as possible), fasting, last levo dose 24hrs before the blood draw no biotin containing supplements for 3-7 days (Biotin can interfere with thyroid blood results as it is used in the testing process).

Testing like this gives consistency in your results and will show stable blood levels of hormone and highest TSH which varies throughout the day. Taking Levo just prior to blood draw can show a falsely elevated result and your GP/Endo might change your dose incorrectly as a result.

Thank you, I’m hoping they’ll let me do that and not make me wait until the 9th

It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. Just go to the pharmacy and tell them you lost it and they will have to replace it.

gabkad, Whilst it is indeed classed as an essential medicine, unfortunately many medics and pharmacists believe that you'll not come to significant harm by going without for several days.

Thankfully I’ve just picked up a new prescription, the receptionist put it through as urgent as I have bloods booked in this week and want an accurate test. All sorted 🙂
