thyroid and fertility

hi,

I wanted to some advice. I’ve been trying to conceive for 2 years and I have had 3 failed ivf cycles in this time also.

I’ve had 7 blood tests to test My Tsh levels which have ranged from 2.6-1.4 in this time.

My Tsh level seems to consistently be around 2.4. Could this be effecting my fertility? I’ve spoken to the Gp and they said it’s all within normal ranges. Can anyone advise if this normal or should I be closer to Tsh 1.

TIA

2.4 is elevated (for most of us).

This is a link to a very good article in the British Medical Journal discussing what the 'normal range' really is. Very readable.

The normal range: it is not normal and it is not a range

I suggest you start by reading this article.

Do you have any other results

ALWAYS test thyroid levels early morning for highest TSH

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Approximately how old are you

Are you vegetarian or vegan

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins
