I haven’t checked these ones, but papers behind a paywall can sometimes be accessed via:

sci-hub.se

For me, I can't even open the site, because my Safari says its an uncontrolled gateway, and I get the 502 Bad Gateway term up.

I think internet providers in the UK have put a blanket ban on anyone accessing sci-hub to prevent breach of copyright.

Mine certainly has, and I miss having access to research papers in full.

There were suspicions sci-hub was being used to spy on research. Academics were told not to use it in case spyware was downloaded. After Russia invaded Ukraine sci-hub was effectively shut down, presumably for security reasons.

It's a shame but we need a safe way to access research.

It's called Open Access!

Anything else is grotesque. Just think of people who have suffered, even died, because doctors, other medics, friends, family, and patients themselves have not been able to access vital information.

Given how much research is in some way government funded, how much has patient contributions (our data, if nothing else), or is derived using Open Access papers, anything else is absolutely unethical and immoral.

(I understand that those without research funding have a major difficulty. But that is where government level bodies should provide either funds or practical resources to support publication.)

I'm for open access. I can also see problems with vanity publishing where people pay to get published. It's a difficult line to tread, not least because currently perr review is nothing such. Current peer review is an old boys network (gender intentional) where journals publish studies reviewed by the authors' mates and novel research is suppressed.

The current situation, though, is that Open Access publishing already requires an up-front payment to the publisher. And, at least in the properly set up ones, still requires some sort of peer review (however broken that is in general).

I mean, even some of the most rapacious of journal publishers seem to have some Open Access.
